Why Kelsea Ballerini Wears Wigs on Tour

Kelsea Ballerini is getting real about her haircare routine. The country superstar recently revealed why she opts to wear wigs while performing on tour. “I honestly have put my hair through it the last over a decade, just touring and coloring and all the styling,” she shared with Nylon. 

For Ballerini, a former coach on “The Voice,” wearing a wig was a way of protecting her hair while she worked to heal it from years of damage. “Three years ago I just very impulsively chopped it and was like, ‘I have to get my hair healthy,’” she explained. 

The singer began taking better care of her locks, a process that included staying away from harsh dyes. She was beginning to see results, but then it came time to go out on the road. 

“… I was looking down the lens of doing a 35-day tour and I was like, ‘I don’t want to undo all this work we just did,’” Ballerini said. “So we decided to do the wig.”

Ballerini Loves to Experiment With Hairstyles

Even as a child Ballerini loved getting glam. “I’ve always been a girly girl,” she shared. “When I was a kid, I would just get into my mom’s cabinets and do makeup, and I had a dress-up box.”

The singer has experimented with different styles over the years, but they have not all been winners. She tried bangs, but didn’t like how they looked, and got into trying new colors. 

“The first time I was allowed to dye my hair I was in middle school — I had dark brown hair and I got highlights, and it was chunky-chunk, and not like the cute ’90s,” Ballerini said. “It was really bad.”

Now Ballerini is starring in a new campaign for Pantene, and is as dedicated as ever to keeping her hair healthy. Especially since she prefers her ultra-blonde tresses when it comes to being in front of an audience. “It’s this weird brain trick I have for myself. When I’m blonde, I’m like, ‘I’m working,'” she explained. 

Ballerini’s Work-Life Balance

The 5-time Grammy-nominated artist understandably strives to find balance between work and taking healthy breaks. But it’s something that does not come easy for her. “… I think when your career is also your passion, you have to really investigate that relationship,” Ballerini shared. 

For now, Ballerini is enjoying writing music, whether or not she plans to release it. “Writing right now is so fun because I don’t know if I’m writing for a record or not,” the singer revealed. “I might just be writing for fun, and then when it’s time to make a record, it might be totally different.”
