For those watching Hollywood’s elite arrive for the Academy Awards, the glitz and elegance of the stars and celebrities didn’t disappoint. Halle Berry, one of the night’s best-dressed stars, dazzled and glimmered in a gown of shattered mirror pieces, while Demi Moore and Selena Gomez sparkled in custom-made bead and crystal-covered dresses. Miley Cyrus shimmered as well, in her black, beaded dress, but it was her lack of eyebrows that made her look stand out.
Cyrus is No Stranger to Controversy in the Name of Fashion
Bleached brows are exactly that: eyebrows that have been bleached or lightened to the point that they’re almost invisible upon first glance. The only surprising thing about Cyrus taking on the dramatic eyebrow trend is that she’s not one of the first to try it.
Unexpectantly, Cyrus’s bleached eyebrows contrasted perfectly with her gothic, high-neck, glittering, black beaded gown and matching lace gloves. With her voluminous waves and light, natural-looking makeup, her piercing blue eyes pulled you in, largely due to the absence of the defining eyebrows.
Cyrus has garnered a reputation as someone willing to experiment with her appearance, whether through her clothing, hairstyles, or makeup. Who can forget her spiky punk look at the 2013 Met Ball, VMA ‘teddy bear’ costume, or her 2000s mullet stage? So it shocked no one that — in true Cyrus fashion — the singer turned heads again when she left for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party after the ceremony in a different black gown, slicked back ponytail, and baby bangs, which were cut after the show.
Bleached Eyebrows Came Back in 2021
Like many trends, bleached eyebrows have come and gone over the years. Madonna bleached her brows at the 1992 release party for her book Sex, and Chloe Sevigny wore the look in the 1997 film Gummo, and during a 2003 red carpet. But the look didn’t catch on, and we wouldn’t see much of it again until the 2010s.
In 2014, they began to appear again, with Miley Cyrus herself wearing them on the cover of W Magazine. The look began popping up on runways, with models such as Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne wearing nonexistent-looking eyebrows. Lady Gaga also became a convert, telling Vogue she liked the look so much that she bleached hers daily.
In 2020 and 2021, the look resurfaced with a vengeance. Some, like “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams, began regularly appearing in public with her eyebrows bleached. Others, like Lizzo, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Halsey, and Kristen Stewart have also dabbled in the trend.
