Kelly Clarkson admits she holds back some of the details of co-parenting her kids with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. The “American Idol” alum made a sarcastic comment about her ex-husband while discussing the double standards involved in raising kids.
Kelly Clarkson Shares Common Parenting Struggle Working Moms Face
During the March 27 episode of the “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce” podcast, Clarkson shared some of what she’s up against as a working mom.
Clarkson co-parents her two kids, River 10, and Remington “Remy,” 8, with Blackstock. When school performances take place during the workweek, she said she feels bad if she’s unable to show up because of her schedule.
“And then [my daughter] is like, ‘Why weren’t you there? This person’s mommy was there.’ And I’m like, ‘Congratulations to her because she made different decisions that led to her being able to be there on a Thursday at 10 a.m.,'” Clarkson said.
The singer continued, “She’ll be like, ‘Well you know, her mom was there?’ And I was like, ‘Well, she got a better mom and you got me.'”
Clarkson Sarcastically Says Co-Parenting With Her Ex ‘Is Fun’
Kelce noted that there’s a double standard, pointing out how her husband, Jason Kelce, doesn’t get the guilt when he leaves for NFL games every week. The kids understand that he doesn’t want to leave, but they think she “could say no” to work opportunities.
Clarkson responded, “Isn’t it funny though how different it is? Because even from a young age, like, we didn’t teach them [that], they just innately [believe it]. Like, he is allowed to be somewhere, but you’re not? That is real interesting.”
The “American Idol” alum noted that she has to hold back about saying anything about the double standard. “There is a lot that I keep in … because co-parenting is fun,” she sarcastically commented.
“It’s like, ‘Oh, he couldn’t come because of this [thing],’ and I’m like, ‘OK, cool. Do you think I just leave and just sit in the park all day?'” Clarkson joked.
The singer wondered how kids learn this and if it’s “taught” in some way noting, “Because I didn’t teach that.”
Clarkson said she continues to reinforce that having a working mom is okay. “Mommy does work, and that’s okay,” she noted. “Women and men work, it’s okay. And you’re gonna be fine. Like I was a latchkey kid … no one was there, and I turned out all right — kind of.”
