Nick Jonas Opens Up About ‘Tough Conversations’ With His Brothers After Their Breakup

Nick Jonas is opening up about the challenging conversations that went down with brothers Joe and Kevin when the former “The Voice” coach wanted to leave the group. The brothers shared how they worked through the tense time and came out better on the other side.

Jonas Brothers Admit There Were ‘Tough Conversations’ Following Split

During the July 31 episode of Mythical Kitchen’s “Last Meals,” Nick, Kevin, and Joe revisited the fallout after the Jonas Brothers’ 2013 breakup.

Nick admitted, “In reflection, I can definitely see how I could have more lovingly communicated something that needed to be said.”

He added, “I think we all knew … it had run its course. I just didn’t know how to maturely articulate that and lovingly do that.”

“I was actually the one that initiated the conversation,” Nick told ABC News in 2013. “In a nutshell I said, ‘Look I feel like we’ve had some complications within the group for a long time without addressing them, I think this train will fall off the tracks without really getting real about some of the concerns and some of the limitations that we may feel as individuals in the group,’ and it was a tough conversation.”

“There was just individual things that we were just butting heads about, whether if it was the way to set up the music video to even just personal opportunities and at some point we decided that it was best to finish this and support each other on our own ventures along the way,” Joe Jonas said at the time.

After the split, they had to relearn how to be brothers before they could be a band again. “We had to certainly do some healing and have some tough conversations,” Nick explained. “And then we also just had to create new memories together. And better times that weren’t work-related, that were just us being family.”

Joe noted, “We were shooting the documentary [‘Chasing Happiness’] when we were really speaking to some of the tough conversations.”

He recalled, “It would be a sit down like this, and we would be like ‘Let’s get into it. What about this was really complicated?'”

Communication became easier when they stepped away from the cameras and had a chance to reconnect.

“We went to Cuba … and we just went to hang,” Joe explained. “I think at one point we realized it was getting too much like an interrogation, like sitting in a room with a camera and having to have these conversations, and we’re like, ‘We actually haven’t had that internally yet,'” so “doing it on camera felt weird.”

He added, “So, for me, Cuba was like ‘Wow, we’re just hanging out and exploring together,’ seeing a place that none of us have been. It was nice.”

Kevin Jonas Recalls ‘Energy Shift’ Moment in Cuba

They also discussed a pivotal moment they were playing and singing together in a stairwell during their trip.

Kevin said he was “already on board” with reuniting as a band. “I was just, like if we can make this happen again, this can be great,” he shared. “But Joe is definitely not there yet. DNCE was going on, Nick had solo stuff. I was not exactly doing the music thing in my own personal life.”

Kevin shared how their trip to Cuba gave Joe a new perspective. “To have the option to come back and be back on the road or make music together again was great,” Kevin noted. “In any capacity, whether that was just a one-off tour, whatever, just to do something. And then to see Joe’s kind of like, the energy shift in that time we were in that stairwell in Cuba was spectacular.”
