When season 27 of “The Voice” kicks off its live shows on May 12, 2025, it will mark the first time that coaches Adam Levine, Michael Bublé, John Legend, and Kelsea Ballerini have filmed together or with their remaining contestants since 2024.
Before the final playoffs aired on May 5, Ballerini confirmed the scheduling gap, writing on Instagram, “we’ve approached our final episode of the playoffs, which also means our last episode from filming last year, and next week we start the LIVE SHOWS for the semi finals.”
The remaining 12 contestants, as well as their coaches, have had to keep quiet about their status as finalists for the last seven months, given that the playoffs were taped in October, per multiple sources including Idol Forum’s spoiler chatroom.
John Legend Confirmed New Taping Schedule for ‘The Voice,’ Noting That It’s ‘Crazy’ for Show Producers to Manage
NBC changed up its filming schedule for “The Voice” in 2023, according to MJs Big Blog, when the pre-taped rounds of seasons 24 and 25 were both filmed during the summer. The network repeated that process in 2024, with Blind Auditions for both season held weeks apart in July.
Legend explained the new schedule to former “The Voice” coach Kelly Clarkson on her talk show in February 2025, noting that Bublé — the only coach appearing on both seasons 26 and 27 — had to tape with his teams for both seasons simultaneously.
“The way we’re taping these days, we do two seasons per, like, summer and early fall,” Legend, who’s now in his 10th season of the show, told Clarkson. “So even when you’re away, you’re really not away. So they were taping Season 26, and then I would go tape Season 27 the next week. Back to back, so Michael was doing both, but the rest of us were only doing one or the other.”
“So, Snoop and Michael and Reba and Gwen were doing the season prior,” he said of the season 26 coaches. “It’s crazy for the producers (to manage), but for me, it’s so fun to do the show.”
Member of Team Kelsea Auditioned for 2 Seasons of ‘The Voice’ Days Apart
In Ballerini’s May 5 post, she shared screenshots of text messages she exchanged that morning with Team Kelsea finalists Iris Herrera and Alanna Lynise, wondering how they felt watching their playoffs finally air the night before.
“Hope you’re feeling all the love today that performance was so slay,” Ballerini wrote to Herrera, who replied that she’d been packing and spending time with family before heading to Los Angeles for the Live Shows.
Interestingly, Herrera has been touted as a comeback success story on “The Voice,” returning to the show after she failed to get a chair turn during her season 26 audition, performing Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy.” Back to try again for season 27, she landed on Team Kelsea after her gritty, rock-infused version of “You Are My Sunshine.”
“Last season with Fleetwood Mac ‘Gypsy,’ I played it safe by doing what Stevie Nicks does,” Herrera said on the show before her season 27 audition, per NBC. “I didn’t, unfortunately, get any chairs. I wasn’t authentic and original to me. (Now) I’ve got a whole new vibe and a whole new song that’s specific to me.”
“I went home and I worked really hard,” she added, but she didn’t have long to improve. Season 26’s Blind Auditions were filmed from July 2 to 7, per MJ’s Big Blog, while season 27’s were taped one week later, between July 15 and 19.
The coaches and contestants will finally all be back together for the season 27 live semi-finals, airing on May 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
