Adam Levine Reflects on ‘Crazy’ Early ‘The Voice’ Seasons: ‘It Was Like Chaos’

As Adam Levine returns as a coach on “The Voice” season 27, he’s reflecting on the early days of the singing competition. Levine, who was a coach from the show’s first season in 2011 until 2019, revealed that things were a a lot more chaotic back in the day.

Adam Levine Called Early ‘The Voice’ Seasons ‘Out of Control’

In a January 2025 interview with NBC Insider, Levine shared just a glimpse at what the early seasons of “The Voice” looked like.

In season 1 of the show, Levine served as a coach alongside CeeLo Green, Blake Shelton, and Christina Aguilera. “It used to just be kind of crazy. We were like the [Rolling] Stones or something,” he shared.

Levine added, “It was like chaos. CeeLo had a bird. We were like a punk rock band. It was wild thinking back on it; it was so out of control.”

Over the years, “The Voice” has become a well-oiled machine and those more chaotic days are firmly in the past.

Levine is totally on board with the show’s vibe now, telling NBC Insider, “The general tone and the efficiency of the show, I know that sounds really weird, has gotten so pleasant,” the singer explained.

He added, “It’s just gotten so different, in a good way, and efficient, and kind of mellow. As boring as that may sound, it’s actually really wonderful. And I’m so proud.”

Adam Levine Explained the Reason Behind His Return to ‘The Voice’

Levine stepped away from the coaching gig after doing it for 16 seasons. Why did the Maroon 5 singer return to “The Voice”?

In a January 2025 interview with E! Online, he explained, “I just felt like it was time. I had some time to reflect and do my thing and be with my family.”

He added, “I was ready to do it, then the stars aligned and here I am.”

Levine also compared how he felt after leaving the show to his return. “It’s funny, I actually didn’t miss it while I was gone,” the singer noted. “But I became more nostalgic about it once I came back.”

It didn’t take much for Levine to step into the role again. “It feels like no time has passed, but then it also feels so different in an amazing way,” he explained.

The singer added that he was “just super happy and pumped” to be back as a coach.
