Not all Hollywood A-list introductions take place at fashion shows and trendy restaurants. Some turn out to be, as Adam Levine described the first time he ran into Jennifer Hudson, “the strangest way to meet somebody in the world.”
Levine, who returned this season as a judge for his 17th season with “The Voice,” was a guest on the February 25 episode of “The Jennifer Hudson Show.” Early in the interview, Levine told the story of meeting Hudson, before she had joined “The Voice” as a judge in Season 15.
And it all started with a late night fire alarm in a Tokyo hotel.
Levine said he went “full Bruce Willis ‘Die Hard,’” running down the hallways and knocking on doors to get everyone out of the building. Grabbing his wallet and keys, Levine then headed for the exit, having no way of knowing that Hudson, who just happened to be staying in the same hotel, was doing the same thing.
“I’m walking down the stairs, and I’m just like, ‘Is that Jennifer Hudson?’” Levine recalled. “I’m like, ‘Jennifer?’ And she’s like, ‘Adam?’ And I’m like, ‘It’s nice to meet you.’”
Jennifer Hudson Was ‘Fanning Out’ During Crazy Introduction to Adam Levine
“I was fanning out, y’all,” Hudson laughed. “Like, forget there’s a whole fire, I was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Adam Levine. Can I get an autograph? It’s me, Jennifer Hudson.’”
Levine and Hudson would find out later that there was no fire, but believing at the time that they might be in danger, the two shared a quick hug, and then Levine was back to “running Bruce Willis style” to help direct people out of the building.
“Meanwhile, I’m like, ‘I think that was Jennifer Hudson,’” Levine said. “It was so crazy.”
Adam Levine Had Just Been on Tour Through Asia With Maroon 5
Ironically enough, Levine had recently been in Tokyo with his band, Maroon 5, as part of a short tour in Asia, which featured eight shows in six countries. The tour began January 29 in Manila, then wound through Jakarta, Bangkok and three dates at the Tokyo Dome. After playing in Kuala Lumpur, the band wrapped up with a February 14 show in Taiwan.
Levine told Hudson it was an amazing tour, made even more so because his family came along. Levine and his wife, Behati Prinsloo share three children – daughters Dusty Rose, 8, and Gio Grace, 6, and a 2-year-old son – and Levine said being able to share the experience with all of them was “a dream coming true.” “I used to feel so far away from home when I went (on tour), but to have my family there, it was kind of this magical moment that I had never experienced before in my life,” he said. “And I’ve experienced a lot, but not that, so I think that was just, I really, like, I held on to it tightly and just had really one of the best times out on the road I’ve ever had.”
Even though the kids occasionally disapproved of some of Dad’s song choices.
“They’re kind of overwhelmed still, because they’re still pretty little, so they’re overwhelmed by the shows and the people, and they get mad when I don’t play certain songs that they want,” Levine said. “And I’m like ‘Sorry, guys, I’m trying my best out there.’ I’ll have to do a set list of all their picks next time.”
