Prince Harry’s Latest Trip Honors Diana Amid Meghan’s Security Concerns

In a move that powerfully echoes one of his mother’s most famous moments, Prince Harry has embarked on a personal and unannounced journey to Angola. The Duke of Sussex arrived solo on Tuesday to partner with The HALO Trust, a humanitarian organization dedicated to clearing landmines, continuing a mission that was close to Princess Diana’s heart.

While Harry’s trip is focused on this crucial work, his wife, Meghan Markle, did not join him, with sources close to the couple citing significant safety considerations.

Harry, 40, has been vocal about security issues, particularly after losing a legal appeal concerning his family’s protection in the U.K. An insider shed light on the decision for Markle to remain in California, telling the Daily Mail, “The Duke won’t let his wife go to England over security concerns, so there was no chance he’d allow her to go to Angola to walk across landmines.”

The Duke’s protective stance highlights his ongoing efforts to shield his family from harm. A source also indicated to the New York Post that the Duke considers his work with HALO to be a personal endeavor. “Halo is really his thing, it means so much to him to be patron, and he just wants to keep his work with them to himself,” the source added.

Angola Is More Than Just a Walk

This journey is significant as it carries on a world-famous legacy. In January 1997, just months before her tragic death, Princess Diana walked through an active minefield in Huambo, Angola, creating iconic images that brought global attention to the devastating aftermath of the country’s 27-year civil war.

Her son has since picked up her torch, making several trips to the region to support HALO’s mission. In 2019, he retraced his mother’s exact steps, and during a HALO Trust event last year, he emphasized the profound importance of this work. “As you know, The HALO Trust’s work in Angola meant a great deal to my mother. Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously,” the Duke of Sussex said, as reported by PEOPLE.

Harry’s presence is intended to do more than just honor the past. He hopes the publicity surrounding his walk will inspire further financial support, particularly from the Angolan government. An event organizer told the Daily Mail, “Usually these trips help to drive a bit more money from the government.”

With Angola aiming to clear all its landmines by 2025, the Duke’s visit is a timely push to help meet that ambitious target. Since 1994, HALO has successfully cleared over 123,000 landmines in the country, transforming former war zones into safe, productive land for communities.

A “Good First Step” Toward Reconciliation With King Charles

While Harry focuses on his work in Africa, signs of a potential thaw in his strained relationship with the royal family are emerging back in London. Just last week, two of the Duke’s senior aides held a private meeting with a top member of King Charles’s team.

According to PEOPLE, the informal talks are being seen as a significant move toward healing the long-standing rift between Harry and his father. “It was a good first step,” an insider shared with the outlet. “It is always better to be talking.”

The meeting, which took place at a private members club near the King’s London residence, included Harry and Markle’s new chief of communications and a key member of their U.K. PR team, who met with the King’s communications secretary.

This follows Harry’s interview with the BBC in May, where he stated he “can’t see a world” in which he could bring his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to the U.K. without what he considers adequate security. While some royal experts believe Prince William may be less inclined to resolve the feud, they also note that the King would likely have his heir’s support before moving forward.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams explained to the Daily Mail, “The King would never have made these moves without William’s support and understanding.”
