Meghan Markle had a lot to say at the TIME 100 Summit.
But at least some of the time, her mind was somewhere else.
Markle admitted that she’s expecting a visit from the Tooth Fairy any day now.
Meghan and Prince Harry’s 5-year-old son Archie is about to lose his first tooth. And Markle found herself worrying that the couple wouldn’t get home in time to be there for the big event.
While speaking to a crowd about balancing work and motherhood, Markle admitted she expects Archie to lose his first tooth any day now, saying, “and I just hope we’re back home in time for it!” Markle put her face in her hands and showed obvious nervousness at the thought of missing it.
In fact, while Prince Harry traveled with his wife to New York City for the TIME 100 Summit, the couple did not appear on the red carpet at the TIME 100 Gala. Instead they jetted back to California to keep from missing Archie’s milestone moment.
Meghan Markle Says She’s the Happiest She’s Ever Been
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, sat down with Jessica Sibley, CEO of TIME Magazine. The two had a 20-minute conversation about Meghan’s life, including the launches of her Netflix show “With Love, Meghan,” her product line “As Ever” and her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder.”
While Meghan admitted the last 18 months building up to those three launches have been busy and at times chaotic, she wouldn’t change a thing. “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she told Sibley. “And that part, to have a partner and a husband who’s just so supportive… and to have healthy kids that are so joyful in the freeness of their life and the safety of their life that we create for them… of all the things that have happened in my life, I never would have imagined getting here at this point that I would feel just so happy and grateful, and I really do.”
Duchess Says She’s Learned to Ignore Her Critics
In the conversation, Meghan opened up about her new projects opening her up to criticism from the public, whether it’s feedback on “As Ever” products or reviews of her Netflix show.
Meghan quoted comedian Tina Fey. In 2009, Fey said in a Golden Globes acceptance speech, “If you ever start to feel good about yourself, they have this thing called the internet, and you can find a lot of people there who don’t like you.”
Meghan told Sibley she’s “made a very, very conscious effort to create boundaries for myself and for my mental health, for my well-being and certainly to role model that as well for my children.”
In addition to 5-year-old Archie, who will turn 6 on May 6, Meghan and Prince Harry have 3-year-old daughter Lilibet.
“I’m conscious of not just raising very strong and confident young woman, but also having a son,” she went on. “I think it’s just as paramount of importance for young men to be raised with a confidence and sense of self that is going to empower the women around them too.”
“It starts with whatever is going on internally,” she added. “When I am able to not even just tune out whatever that noise is, [but] to really not give it any credence, that has become so much a part of my day-to-day life.”
