Meghan Markle Explains Story Behind Viral Labor Dance Video

The Duchess of Sussex finally addresses the hospital room footage that had fans hitting replay and reveals why she decided to share such a personal moment. Meghan Markle is setting the record straight about her viral “Baby Momma Dance” video during a candid conversation on the “Aspire with Emma Grede” podcast, which is set to release on Tuesday, June 17. The 43-year-old duchess discussed the behind-the-scenes clip from her daughter Princess Lilibet’s birth, which she posted on Instagram June 4 to mark the little one’s 4th birthday, according to People.

The video shows Markle and Prince Harry, 40, dancing together in a hospital room to encourage labor, featuring the song “Baby Mamma.” The footage captures Harry joining in with dance moves while wearing a grey hoodie, as Markle “twerks” in a black maternity dress.

“Did you see my ‘Baby Momma’ dance?” she asked podcast host Grede with a laugh during their conversation, as reported in People’s preview.

Behind the Viral Moment

Grede, the founding partner and chief product officer of SKIMS and CEO of Good American, admitted to watching the clip multiple times. “We maybe watched it like 20 times yesterday, and I was like, is that, is that her? Is that Prince Harry there with the fingers…I was like, okay…good on Harry, let’s go,” Grede shared.

The entrepreneur praised Markle for showing a side fans hadn’t seen before. “But that’s you, right? Like that’s you in a way that we kind of haven’t been able to see you before,” Grede continued. “And I did like a little secret cheer, cause I was like, well, that’s what I kind of want to see from you. Like I wanna see that happiness and that honesty and that ‘I don’t give a [expletive]’ kind of thing.”

Markle revealed the video was taken four years ago when Lilibet was overdue. In her original Instagram caption, she explained that after trying spicy food, walking, and acupuncture, dancing was their last resort to bring on labor.

Sharing Life on Her Own Terms

The duchess emphasized that the old footage serves as proof of her authentic life happening away from public scrutiny. “That was four years ago,” she told Grede. “So it’s also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there’s still a whole life — a real, authentic, fun life — that’s happening behind the scenes.”

Markle expressed thankfulness for having control over her narrative through social media. “I’m just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms,” she said during the podcast preview.

The duchess has been actively sharing personal moments since returning to Instagram in early 2025. She recently posted Father’s Day tributes featuring Prince Harry with their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Lilibet, captioning one post simply “The best.”
