A former lead from “The Bachelorette” is navigating a cancer diagnosis while also moving across the country. Katie Thurston revealed she has breast cancer, and her latest updates provide some good news.
In one Instagram Story update, Thurston admitted the week after going public with her diagnosis was “A LOT.” In sharing the results of her recent scans, Thurston admitted, “Today I feel calm, less scared, and ready.”
Katie Thurston & Fiance Jeff Arcuri Have Had to Change Some Plans
On February 15, Thurston revealed via Instagram she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnosis came on the cusp of Thurston’s planned move from Los Angeles, California to New York City to live with her fiance, comedian Jeff Arcuri.
Thurston has kept fans updated on additional developments since going public with her diagnosis. In a February 18 Instagram Story, Thurston shared she was returning to Los Angeles temporarily while continuing to look for a new place in NYC. She noted she was hoping to find someplace near Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, but was flexible.
“In the meantime, important appointments this week… Thank you for all your love and support. Going public with my battle was more helpful than I ever anticipated. Thankful for the army standing behind me,” she added.
On February 19, Thurston shared in an Instagram Story she was scheduled to have a lymph node biopsy, CT scan, and treatment plan consultation all on that day.
Thurston shared “Good news!” on February 21, revealing in another Instagram Story that her cancer had not metastasized. She added that the biopsy revealed cancer was found in her lymph nodes, but she noted that was “expected.”
“Two more appointments left in LA before officially moving to NYC March 1st. The anticipated order of things is fertility (egg/embryo freezing), chemo, then surgery,” Thurston detailed.
She gave fans more insight into her living situation via a February 22 Instagram Story. “Originally I was supposed to move to NYC in April. Plans changed quickly and we had to find a place by March 1st in order to transfer my cancer treatment to New York,” she noted.
Arcuri Has Canceled Tour Dates to Be By His Fiancée’s Side
Thurston’s fiance has been by her side throughout the early stages of her cancer journey, and he made a big decision to ensure he could continue that. On February 20, she posted another Instagram Story where she addressed Arcuri’s change of plans.
“I was originally planning on moving back to [Washington] to be with my family and start care while Jeff continued his world tour,” she explained. Arcuri has been headlining a big comedy tour with dates across the United States as well as abroad. Before receiving her diagnosis, Thurston planned to travel with him.
Thurston revealed that Arcuri “opted to postpone the upcoming dates to be by my side and I’ll forever be so thankful for this selfless act.”
Arcuri announced the tour news on his Instagram page on February 20. “A few days ago, my fiancee Katie was diagnosed with breast cancer. This is an incredibly challenging time for both of us, and as she embarks on this difficult journey, I’ve made the decision to be by her side every step of the way,” he wrote.
In apologizing to his fans in New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, where shows have been postponed, he wrote, “I am so sorry I can’t be there as planned, but I hope you understand that my family will always come first.”
Arcuri received nearly 5,000 comments from supportive fans on his tour postponement post.
“Take notes, people. This is how you show, with actions AND words, true love and commitment to your partner(s),” one comment read.
“Absolutely nothing else matters more in this moment than being with your fiancée, 🤍🤍” wrote another Instagram user.
“From Australia, we understand. Love comes first and we will see you when the moment is right for you both, ❤️” someone else added.
