Leah Messer Shares How Her Family Navigates Ali’s Muscular Dystrophy

“Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” star Leah Messer is opening up about her family helping her 15-year-old daughter, Ali, manage her muscular dystrophy.

While speaking to E! News in February 2025, Messer noted that fans saw her arguing with Ali because she did not want her wheelchair in the premiere episode of “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” season 2B. She said moments like that have “been a challenge” for her and her daughter.

In addition, Messer said she, Ali’s father, Corey Simms, her twin, Aleeah, and her younger sister, Addie, 11, all help her navigate having muscular dystrophy.

“We all do it together, we all manage. And for us, it’s kind of awkward when people want to help us. It’s our day-to-day life. We just do it,” said Messer to the publication. “And, also, it’s uncomfortable for Ali if people are feeling bad for her. That makes her feel a little different.” 

In addition, Messer described Aleeah as being “so supportive” to her twin.

“So it’s a balance between the two, letting Aleeah be a child and then also having empathy and being there for her sister,” said Messer during the interview.

She also told E! News that Ali does not need pity. Messer asserted that Ali is “intelligent and strong.”

Leah Messer Shared She Wants to Keep Her Daughter ‘Safe’

During a January 2025 interview with TooFab, Messer said she has had some difficulty worrying about Ali’s safety.

“It’s a challenge. Probably one of the hardest things I’ve gone through this far with being a mom and navigating her having muscular dystrophy. And knowing how to keep her safe, and also allowing her to be independent and get around just like everyone else,” said Messer to the publication.

Messer clarified that she wants her daughter “to use her voice.” She also said that Ali has increased her willingness to use her wheelchair.

Leah Messer Said Her Eldest Daughters Need to ‘Live & Learn’ in a January 2025 Interview

In a January 2025 interview with People magazine, Messer said she realized that she needs to allow her eldest children “to live and learn”

“I’m just letting them go. It’s time to let them grow their wings and give them that space to learn and grow. It’s what I’m learning to navigate as they’re entering and adapting to high school,” said Messer to People magazine.

She also mentioned her desire to ensure Ali’s safety. She explained that she is concerned about Ali “overworking her muscles” because of her muscular dystrophy.

“It’s been a balance as her mom to keep her safe and protect her and also allow her to have that freedom. I think we’re learning and navigating it together. It’s something that I struggle with every single day. I do my best. I’m not perfect, but I’ll do whatever it takes for her,” said Messer while speaking to People magazine.
