‘Star Wars’ Actor to Reprise Iconic Role in New Animated Series

Since “Star Wars: A New Hope” hit the silver screen in 1977, George Lucas’ sci-fi empire has grown to encompass a total of nine feature films, seven live-action series, nine animated series, over a hundred video games and more than 1,500 publications including children’s books, comics, and novels.

Now the intergalactic franchise is set to add yet another story to its already stacked roster of projects in the form of “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past.” Set to make its Disney+ debut on September 19, 2025, the upcoming series will mark the fifth “LEGO Star Wars” animated series and feature the return of some familiar faces from the annals of “Star Wars” history.

Cameron Monaghan to Return as Cal Kestis in New ‘LEGO Star Wars’ Project

Building on the story of “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy,” which debuted in 2024, the forthcoming series will reintroduce iconic series characters like Princess Leia, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, and Obi-Wan Kenobi like they’ve never been seen before. Additionally, Cal Kestis, the hero of Respawn Entertainment’s “Star Wars: Jedi” video game series, will make his first appearance outside of the game franchise in the upcoming series.

Voiced once again by the character’s original actor, “Shameless” star Cameron Monaghan, the red-headed Jedi will make several appearances throughout the forthcoming season, bringing Cal Kestis to life (or at least LEGO life) for the first time ever.

Monaghan’s role in “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past” will mark the actor’s first voice role outside of a video game, and may open the door for the star to eventually make a live-action appearance in the ever-expanding “Star Wars” universe.

In a March 2024 interview at FanExpo Vancouver, Monaghan, known for his roles in projects like “Gotham” and “Shattered,” revealed that he would “absolutely” want to bring Kestis to life in a live-action project as long as it furthers “the story or the character in some way.”

“I don’t want him to just kind of show up and stand around and be there. I want him to mean something and for there to be a signifigance for the character itself. So, it would have to make sense. But in the right context, then, yeah, absolutely,” Monaghan added.

Beyond his latest video game appearance in “Jedi: Battle Scars,” Kestis has similarly appeared in his own “Star Wars” spin-off novel and EA’s smartphone game “Star Wars” Galaxy of Heroes.” While far from a live-action debut, Monaghan’s Cal Kestis will star in the upcoming “LEGO Star Wars” four-part sequel series ahead of the release of Respawn’s third “Star Wars: Jedi” game.

What is ‘LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past’ About?

Though the return of Kestis/Monaghan to the “Star Wars” universe is major news for diehard franchise devotees, the character will be a bit different that the hard-hitting Jedi warrior fans were introduced to in the video game series.

That’s because “LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past” will feature a “What If?” format as LEGO characters from throughout the galaxy are pulled through a mysterious purple rift resulting in one-of-a-kind mashups including Darth versions of Rey Skywalker and Jar Jar Binks. Meanwhile, former villains like Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt will appear in the series as Jedi warriors.

Monaghan, similarly set to appear in “Tron: Ares” later this year, will reprise his role as Cal Kestis alongside stars like “Stranger Things” actor Gaten Matarazzo as Sig Greebling, Ashlet Eckstein as Ashoka Tano and Catherine Taber as Pirate Queen Amidala.

Original Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill is similarly set to make a guest voice-acting appearance in the upcoming series.
