George Takei is officially back in the captain’s seat. The beloved actor is reprising his iconic role as Captain Hikaru Sulu in the new scripted podcast “Star Trek: Khan,” which was announced during the “Star Trek” universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025.
The series, set to premiere Sept. 8 in honor of Star Trek Day, will explore the untold events on Ceti Alpha V and the transformation of Khan Noonien Singh from superhuman leader to the vengeful antagonist seen in “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”
New Voices Join Familiar Faces in “Star Trek: Khan”
Takei isn’t the only franchise veteran making a return. Tim Russ, who portrayed Ensign Tuvok in “Star Trek: Voyager,” will also reprise his role. The cast includes Naveen Andrews as Khan and Wrenn Schmidt as Lieutenant Marla McGivers. New additions include Sonya Cassidy as Dr. Rosalind Lear, Olli Haaskivi as Delmonda, Maury Sterling as Ivan, Mercy Malick as Ursula, and Zuri Washington as Madot.
According to Entertainment Weekly, episodes will drop weekly on Mondays through Nov. 3 across all major podcast platforms.
“Star Trek: Khan” offers fans a dramatic deep-dive into a key piece of franchise lore and brings back several familiar voices—most notably, George Takei. With the return of Captain Sulu, longtime fans can expect a nostalgic and thrilling audio experience.
The series is written by Kirsten Beyer and David Mack, based on a story by “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” writer and director Nicholas Meyer. Fred Greenhalgh serves as director. The podcast is produced by CBS’s Eye Podcast Productions Inc., in partnership with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, with Realm as the production studio, per Deadline.
“Star Trek” Universe Continues to Expand
The project joins a growing slate of “Star Trek” content, including the recently teased “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Season 4, which will feature a Muppet-inspired episode, also revealed during the Comic-Con event. The latest installment of the hit series is expected to be released sometime in 2026, potentially in the first half of the year.
The ever-expanding “Star Trek” universe is also gearing up for its next live-action chapter with the upcoming series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” The show made its presence known at San Diego Comic-Con with the debut of its full cast and the release of its first official trailer.
Set in the 32nd century, the series picks up after the events of “Star Trek: Discovery.” It follows a new generation of cadets as Starfleet reopens its long-dormant training academy near San Francisco, marking a significant return after more than a century of the Federation’s absence from Earth.
