Patrick Mahomes‘ family is facing a heartbreaking situation that has brought the football community together in support and prayer. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s mother, Randi Mahomes, recently turned to social media with an urgent plea for help regarding a young family member. On Monday, she posted an emotional message on Instagram asking followers to join her in praying for a special little boy who has captured hearts across Chiefs Kingdom.
“Please join me in continuing to pray for my cousin’s grandson,” Randi wrote in her Instagram story. “Sweet Luka is still fighting Stage L2 intermediate neuroblastoma. He is undergoing chemo and fighting hard. Please pray for this sweet family as they are going through one of the hardest trials of their lives.”
The devastating journey began when Luka was just eight months old during a family vacation. The perfectly healthy baby aspirated pool water, which initially seemed like a minor incident. However, his mother, Cassie, an ICU nurse, noticed his breathing had become labored a few days later and took him to his pediatrician, suspecting pneumonia.
Luka had to be life-flighted to Dallas Children’s Hospital on June 3rd, where medical professionals found a large tumor pressing against his left lung, causing it to fill with fluid and completely collapse.
Community Support Grows Through Social Media Campaign
Randi Mahomes has been actively advocating for her young relative, utilizing her platform to raise awareness about his condition and garner support. She included a link to the family’s GoFundMe campaign, writing, “If you feel led, here is a link to donate to their family.”
The fundraising effort aims to raise $4,500 to help cover medical expenses, travel costs, housing, and the loss of income as Cassie stepped away from her nursing career. The ICU nurse cannot return to work while Luka remains immunocompromised, as bringing home any illness could put his health at further risk.
Neuroblastoma is a complex cancer that affects very young children. According to the University of Chicago’s Medical Center, the disease originates in immature nerve tissue in the adrenal gland or sympathetic ganglia near the spinal cord. Most children with neuroblastoma receive their diagnosis before age five, with more than 95% diagnosed before turning 10.
The Chiefs Kingdom has responded with overwhelming generosity to the family’s need. Randi herself contributed $500 to the campaign and has continued advocating for Luka’s journey throughout his treatment. Even Patrick Mahomes has lent his support, contributing his autograph to Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia sales with proceeds going directly toward Luka’s medical expenses.
Personal Struggles Fuel Advocacy Efforts
Randi’s commitment to helping Luka’s family stems partially from her own recent experiences with health challenges and loss. She has been open about her struggles with grief after losing her mother to cancer and caring for her ailing father through hospice care.
The Mahomes matriarch has also been candid about navigating midlife health issues, including menopause symptoms that left her feeling dismissed by traditional doctors. “I was feeling dismissed by traditional doctors, despite being exhausted, uncomfortable, and just not myself,” she shared. “I knew something needed to change.”
Her personal battles have transformed her into an advocate for others facing similar challenges. “No one tells you being a woman in your 40s is this hard,” she continued. “The exhaustion, the changes, the feeling that nobody gets it… I want other women to know they’re not alone.”
Throughout Luka’s treatment journey, Randi has remained a constant source of encouragement, consistently sharing updates and prayer requests. Back in June, during his second round of chemotherapy scheduled for June 25, 2025, she wrote on Instagram: “Asking for prayers for my cousin’s grandson, Luka,” adding: “God’s got this.”
