John Elway Is Still Mourning Dear Friend

Former NFL star John Elway is mourning the loss of his friend and former agent, Jeff Sperbeck, whom he lost in a golf cart accident in April 2025. Sperbeck was 62. At the time of the tragic incident, which has since been ruled an accident, Elway was driving the golf cart.

A new report from Page Six has since provided an update, sharing how Elway is doing now, three months after the incident.

How Has the Loss of His Friend Impacted John Elway?

“John is not coping well with the loss and the accident. He has been really upset and withdrawn,” a source said, Page Six reports. Elway’s behavior has also been different. Elway has gone from being a “man about town,” to now preferring not to socialise, Page Six reports.

“He is very down,” the source said, Page Six reports. “He is not his usual upbeat self.”

Following the golf cart accident, an investigation was made by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in California. The conclusion stated that there was no criminal activity. “It’s over,’’ Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco told local outlet 9NEWS, Fox News reports. “We’ve talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal, it was what we’ve been saying all along that this was a tragic accident.”

Elway’s lawyer also commented on the situation, telling Page Six, “This has been a terrible situation for everybody. We always knew that John had done nothing wrong, however, that does not lessen the sadness.” In addition to Sperbeck serving as Elway’s longtime agent, he was also his business partner in the winery 7Cellars.

John Elway Makes Emotional Statement

Elway has previously discussed his thoughts on the tragic accident. He made an emotional statement about Sperbeck and sending his love to his family.

“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said in a statement in April, ESPN reports. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”

He continued, “My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

Cori also released a statement, which was posted on X. In it, she referred to Sperbeck as “a wonderful father, husband, brother, son and friend to many and will be profoundly missed by all.”
