Just one month after promising forever, Rute Cardoso is living through the unthinkable. Cardoso is mourning the sudden loss of her husband, Liverpool star Diogo Jota. What should have been the start of a lifetime together was cut tragically short.

Jota died in a tragic car crash on July 3 at age 28, just 11 days after the couple’s wedding, alongside his 26-year-old brother, fellow soccer player André Silva. On Tuesday, July 22, Cardoso marked what would have been their one-month wedding anniversary with a tear-jerking Instagram post that read:
“1 month since our ‘til death do us part,’” she wrote. “Forever yours.”
A Glimpse Into Their Wedding Day
Cardoso’s post, which has received over 1.3 million likes, included three intimate photos from their wedding. The first shows the newlyweds holding hands, dressed in their wedding attire. The other two capture the couple dancing lovingly at their reception, moments filled with joy, just days before tragedy struck.
The couple, who shared three children, tied the knot on Sunday, June 22. Jota had posted a wedding video to Instagram just one day before his death, captioned: “A day we will never forget.”
A Tragic Accident That Shook the Soccer World

On July 3, both Jota and Silva died in a fatal car crash in Spain’s Zamora province, according to BBC and Sky News. Their deaths sent shockwaves through the global football community and left their family devastated. On July 5, friends, family, and teammates gathered in Gondoma, Portugal, for the brothers’ funeral.

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk and manager Arne Slot led tributes with floral arrangements shaped like soccer jerseys. Other notable attendees included Bruno Fernandes, João Félix, João Cancelo, José Fonte, Danilo, Adrien Silva, and Portugal’s national team coach Roberto Martínez.
Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, who gave a eulogy, was seen carrying white flowers in tribute. Cardoso, heartbroken, walked behind the caskets of her husband and brother-in-law, supported by loved ones. A large crowd also gathered outside the church to pay their respects.
Diogos’s Sweet Family Of 5
Diogo Jota and Rute Cardoso were proud parents to three young children. Their eldest son, Dinis, was born in February 2021, followed by their second son, Duarte, in March 2023. In November 2024, they welcomed a baby girl, whose name has not been publicly shared.
