“The Bold and the Beautiful” star Scott Clifton has some thoughts about Liam Spencer‘s long-running love triangle with Steffy Forrester and Hope Logan. Avid fans of the show have watched Liam bounce back and forth between the two ladies for at least a decade.
While the storyline has certainly delivered its share of drama over the years, the excitement is wearing thin, and even Clifton himself isn’t afraid to admit how bleak it’s become.
Scott Clifton Admits Liam’s Love Triangle Needs a Break on ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’
In an interview with Soap Opera Digest on April 24, 2025, Clifton hinted that Liam’s love triangle with Steffy and Hope may have finally run its course. “The Bold and the Beautiful” star admitted that the storyline has been recycled so often, it’s become predictable.
So when Executive Producer and Head Writer Bradley Bell called to tell him that Liam would be ‘sprinkled in’ to the show moving forward, Clifton was understanding of the decision.
Clifton noted that he could understand if Bell felt that Liam’s go-to storyline with Steffy and Hope needs some time on the bench, adding that he appreciated the boss’ heads-up. He admitted:
That was something that I had worried about for at least the last decade. Like, there’s no way this is sustainable, right? This guy just going back and forth between these two women, never learning his lesson and becoming more and more unlikable to the point where you can’t just say, ‘Oh, his heart was in the right place.’ At a certain point, you can’t even say that anymore about the character! I got exactly where Brad was coming from.
Clifton Admits He’s ‘Self-Conscious’ About Latest Storyline
Since that conversation, Liam has been placed on the backburner, with no major storyline on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” This lasted for a few months—until he finally returned in what may be one of the most heartbreaking plots the series has ever seen.
Speaking about Liam’s brain tumor storyline, Clifton said he’s grateful for the opportunity and honored to help the story. But taking on the role proved to be quite challenging for the actor. In an interview with TV Insider, Clifton admitted he felt ‘really self-conscious’ about whether he was doing it justice. He added:
I told myself I was going to do a lot of research on inoperable brain tumors and what they would do to you. I’ve been really self-conscious because this is not some made-up soap opera thing. This is an actual condition that people have, and people die from, and I didn’t want it to be cheesy.
As for whether Liam’s condition will bring “Steam” back together, Clifton’s response was clear–it’s not happening.
It’s not a desperation to hook up. Liam’s not trying to get Steffy back or to intervene in her relationship with Finn. It’s none of that.
