‘General Hospital’ Star Katelyn MacMullen Weighs in on Weeping Willow

Willow Tait is having a really rough time on “General Hospital.” She has lost custody of her small children, Wylie and Amelia, finalized her divorce from Michael, and gotten engaged to the guy who makes nearly everyone’s skin crawl, Drew Cain. All of that has happened in the last month!

Soap Opera Digest recently caught up with Willow’s portrayer, Katelyn MacMullen, and she wants to shake her character just as much as the audience does. “Of course, the audience is feeling like, ‘Willow, wake up! He’s doing all this stuff! How are you not picking up on this? How are you not becoming suspicious?!” So I completely understand the audience’s reaction, for sure,” says the actress.

“General Hospital” viewers get a daily front row seat for all of the absolutely horrifying things that Drew is currently doing to mess with the lives of those closest to Willow, and the frustration is palpable. It is hard to believe that she can be so clueless, but MacMullen admits that at times, she, too, is left in the dark.

She admits, “I mean, it’s funny, because sometimes I only see my [scenes in the] scripts and I don’t know what else is happening on the show outside of my stuff. I don’t know some of the other happenings in Port Charles, especially where it pertains to Drew, and then when I hear about it, I’m like, “Oh, my gosh…”

Since MacMullen and Cameron Mathison (who plays Drew Cain) don’t always know what is really happening, they are just as invested as the GH audience is. “We are always like, “Do you know where it’s going? Have you heard anything?” And we’re both like, “No [laughs].” We’re invested, too! Cameron is just such an incredible guy. He’s so fun to work with. I love the way that he’s just poured himself into portraying Drew. He’s been so great, and it’s funny because since as Willow, I never see Drew doing the bad things, when we work together, we’re just so happy. But obviously, once Willow finds out all the tea, it’s not going to be the same.”

Katelyn MacMullen on Working With Rory Gibson

Willow recently told her ex, Michael Corinthos (played by GH newcomer Rory Gibson), that she is going to marry Drew, and the reaction was as bad as expected. Michael knows that their children aren’t safe with Drew, so he is determined to keep them away from Willow as well until she comes to her senses. Willow has pushed back, saying that Michael wouldn’t repair their marriage but is also now trying to prevent her from moving on.

“When it comes to Michael, I think Willow has sort of convinced herself, ‘Okay, moving forward, the right way is to be honest with him and try to make something work with him.’ Of course, that doesn’t quite pan out the way she’s expecting. From her perspective, because again, she doesn’t know all the stuff about Drew, she’s missing information. when Michael fights back so heavily on the idea of her getting married, I think Willow interprets it as, ‘Oh, you don’t want me to have a leg up in court. Got it.’ She doesn’t know that Michael is kind of protecting her, in a sense, or protecting the kids from all this stuff [going on with Drew]. “

Rory Gibson may be new to the role of Michael, but it feels like he has always been there, and Katelyn seems to agree. “He’s so kind and lovely and obviously so talented, it’s crazy. We always joke that we’ve just been screaming at each other since day one. We have this really funny rapport, and it’s so much fun working with him. It’s crazy how he kind of just stepped right in and was so in it, as if he knew every character already. He’s just really shown up and done the work, and he’s been truly incredible and so much fun to work with.”
