The new season of “Basketball Wives” premieres May 5 on VH1, and all eyes are on longtime cast member Jennifer Williams, whose relationship with husband Christian Gold is drawing intense scrutiny. The couple married in Paris on Sept. 14, 2024—just days after Gold was briefly jailed for violating his probation related to a previous false imprisonment conviction.
According to TMZ, Gold was taken into custody on Sept. 6, 2024, in DeKalb County, Georgia, for failing to notify his probation officer about international travel and for not paying $12,500 in court-ordered restitution. The couple had traveled to Italy and Switzerland that July, and authorities reportedly discovered the violation through their social media posts. Although he later settled the outstanding payment, Gold was sentenced to 15 days in jail. The judge allowed him a temporary release to attend the wedding in Paris. He served two days immediately and was ordered to return after the ceremony to complete the remaining sentence.
Legal troubles reportedly continued in February, when Gold was named in a civil lawsuit filed by 21 individuals accusing him of operating a Ponzi scheme. The plaintiffs allege he defrauded them out of more than $120,000 under the pretense of investment opportunities. The suit also claims that as many as 150 people nationwide may have been affected. Gold now faces multiple counts, including fraud, wire fraud, and violations of the Georgia RICO Act.
Williams has not publicly commented on the details of the case but was present during her husband’s September court hearing.
Tensions Rise Between Williams and Castmates Over Her Marriage
In the season 12 premiere and promotional appearances, Williams has responded to ongoing criticism of her marriage—particularly from castmate and longtime friend Evelyn Lozada. In a red carpet interview ahead of the show’s return, Williams said, “I know people have had things to say—some of my castmates—but, you know, when you’ve had no successful marriages, you are in no place to give any advice.”
The tension between Williams and Lozada is expected to be a key storyline this season. According to Collider, Lozada and other cast members have expressed concern over Gold’s legal history and intentions, citing a shift in Williams’ behavior and friendships.
During a panel discussion, Williams addressed the backlash more directly, stating, “She’s never been in a successful marriage. So she is not one to give advice to anyone.” She added, “I am going to protect my man at all costs.” Responding to questions about Gold’s legal issues, she said, “I don’t give a **** what you think. It’s not your business.”
Williams and Gold Appear Together at Premiere Amid Ongoing Scrutiny
Despite the controversy, Williams and Gold attended the “Basketball Wives” premiere together. Gold posted a photo from the event on Instagram, writing, “She’s no longer a Basketball Wife. She’s my wife. We’re on our own court now. This is a championship worth celebrating. And there’s many more championships loading.”
Williams replied in the comments: “Caption is accurate AF! Game on” followed by a heart emoji.
As season 12 unfolds, viewers will see how Williams navigates her castmates’ concerns, legal developments, and shifting relationships—on and off the screen.
