Porsha Williams‘ estranged husband, Simon Guobadia, has been deported to Nigeria after spending months in ICE custody, but will still participate in their upcoming divorce hearing via video conference. The 61-year-old businessman was released from the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia and flown back to his home country within the past few days, according to Us Weekly.
Guobadia’s friend and business partner Tai Savet confirmed the deportation, telling the outlet that the Nigeria-born entrepreneur was in “good spirits” despite the challenging experience at the detention center. This marked the first time Guobadia had ever been incarcerated, making the months-long detention particularly difficult for him.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security website no longer lists Guobadia in its system. The outlet also obtained a selfie he took on Monday, June 9, confirming his return to Nigeria. Despite his deportation, Guobadia maintains no animosity toward the current administration and has expressed interest in discussing his situation with President Trump.
Guobadia first arrived in the United States in 1982 but faced multiple immigration challenges over the decades. He was initially deported in 1985 but returned on a work visa the following year. After facing criminal charges related to credit card and bank fraud in 1987, he was deported again in 1992, according to WSB-TV.
Divorce Proceedings Continue Despite Distance
The deportation comes at a crucial time in Guobadia’s divorce battle with Real Housewives of Atlanta star Williams. The former couple is scheduled to face off in court later this week. Guobadia is now appearing via video conference due to his current location in Nigeria.
Williams, 43, filed for divorce in February 2024 after 15 months of marriage. The proceedings have been complicated by various factors, including Guobadia’s detention. The judge previously sided with Williams regarding their marital home, allowing her to remain there until a final divorce decision is reached, Us Weekly notes.
The upcoming hearing focuses on their prenuptial agreement, which they signed before their Nov. 25, 2022, wedding. This hearing has been postponed multiple times, partly due to Guobadia’s immigration detention and the logistical challenges it created.
Looking Forward Despite Setbacks
Guobadia has channeled his experience into a new business venture. Along with his team, he’s launching a company that will sell shirts to help people currently in ICE custody, according to the publication.
Williams addressed her ex-husband’s detention through social media, maintaining a respectful tone despite their ongoing divorce. “It’s disheartening to see my estranged husband make choices that have led to this outcome. At this moment my priority is moving forward with my family,” she wrote on Instagram.
The judge has accommodated both parties’ unique circumstances, allowing Guobadia to participate virtually. Williams is also granted permission to attend by video due to her career demands as a reality television personality.
