“Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” newcomer Jennifer Tilly wouldn’t use the word “rich” to describe herself.
“I don’t think of myself as rich,” Tilly told E! News on Tuesday, January 14. “But I guess I’m delusional because I do have several properties and a purse apparently that cost $33,000.” In the interview, Tilly confirmed that the Louis Vuitton bag actually cost a cool $22,000.
Tilly was married to Sam Simon, the creator of “The Simpsons” from 1984 through 1991. After their divorce, Tilly was awarded “a piece” of that success as part of her divorce settlement, which she shared on an episode of the show.
Tilly joined the cast of the Beverly Hills franchise as a “friend of” for season 14.
Jennifer Tilly Says She Lives in a ‘Small House’
Although Tilly is undoubtedly well off — her net worth is an estimated $40 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth — she told E! News that she doesn’t live outside of her means.
“My boyfriend and I live very simply and a very small cluttered house. Yes, there’s a giant house next door, but we don’t go there. I guess we’re kind of delusional. I don’t have a giant mansion or a chauffeur that calls me Miss Tilly and makes out with me like Sutton’s chauffeur. I just live my life the way that I used to live,” she explained.
Tilly insists that money doesn’t make a person happy — and she alluded to this sort of thing playing out on the popular reality show that she’s now a part of.
“This is why people love Housewives. They’re so rich and they can afford all the plastic surgeon that the heart could desire and designer clothes and jewels, but they’re still not happy. That is the key to Housewives. Like, ‘Wow, if I had all that wealth, I would be happy.’ But these people, they’re miserable. That’s why people like to watch Housewives,” she said.
Fans Reacted to Jennifer Tilly’s Comments
Perhaps unsurprisingly, fans aren’t exactly buying what Tilly is saying — though many agree that she’s at least self-aware by calling herself “delusional.”
“She has homes next to each other, one is just for entertaining while the other is the one she actually lives in. Totally not wealthy behavior at all,” one person wrote on a Reddit thread about Tilly’s comments.
“It’s always rich people who think they’re not rich,” another Redditor added.
“What’s funny is that this works both ways. Rich people tend to underestimate how rich and poor people underestimate how poor they are,” a third comment read.
