Bozoma Saint John took over the business world, building an impressive resume throughout the years. But, just like everyone else, she had to start at the bottom.
And that included a temp job with none other than Spike Lee.
“I was temping and I got the call that said Spike had fired his assistant and that they needed someone to answer the phones. And so I went in there, day one, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ready to answer the phones like a champion,” Saint John recalled during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 24.”
“He was walking in or he was walking by, and he was carrying a script under his arm. And the thing is, I was a know-it-all. Somebody who just thought she was so brilliant,” she continued. “And because, alongside my pre-med courses in college, I also took African American history and literature, when I saw that he was writing something, I was like I want to read it. Maybe I can give him some notes.”
Fallon couldn’t hold back his laughter at this, putting both hands over his face.
“So I asked if I could read his script and then I took like an actual red pen to it. And I made notes to diction, character development, like all kinds of stuff” she added.
Saint John remembered that everyone else in the office couldn’t believe what they were seeing when he was given her notes. Meanwhile, she sat with her purse in her lap, thinking that she was about to be fired.
However, that wasn’t the case at all.
“He came out and he was like, ‘You know what? You made some good notes. You should stick around,” Saint John said.
The two have remained close friends since this hilarious incident, and Lee even commented at one point saying that “he knew on day one” that he was going to be working for her at some point.
And when she became the Chief Marketing Officer of Netflix, that kind of came true, since they gave Lee a deal.
Bozoma Saint John Has a Wild Marketing Idea Involving the Statue of Liberty
While on the “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Saint John was asked a very important question.
“So when you’re doing these marketing ideas for these companies, where do your ideas come from,” Fallon inquired.
Saint John responded, saying that she’s very “intuitive” and because of that, her “big ideas come in all sorts of places.”
Specifically, she recalled a specific idea she had for her hair and beauty company, Eve By Boz, to celebrate the first anniversary of its launch.
And not to mention, she had to try and outdo what she did for the launch, hosting it at the top of the Empire State Building because she was “launching an empire”
“So, she’s like, ‘Well, what are you going to do to top that?’ And I was like, ‘I want to put a wig on the Statue of Liberty,” Saint John revealed. “But I don’t know if that’s in code. I don’t know if that’s going to suffocate Staten Island. I’m not quite sure what’s going to happen, but I want a wig on the Statue of Liberty.”
So, is she actually going to do this?
“I am going to try my hardest,” she said.

In a March 2025 interview on Bravo’s “Hot Mic” podcast, Saint John made it clear that she wants to return for season 15 of Bravo’s hit show.
“I don’t do anything just for one season. You know?” she told host Alex Baskin on the podcast. “I feel like my life and my experiences are building blocks on each other. And as long as I feel like this is a mutually beneficial relationship, then we’re good.”
“I don’t want to come in and be like one and done or feel like, oh my gosh, I didn’t really get a great experience,” the Saint John added.
