The London Palladium witnessed a true theatrical triumph on Thursday night when an unexpected illness led to a star-making turn for an understudy. Rachel Zegler, the Golden Globe-winning actress currently headlining a celebrated revival of “Evita,” made a sudden departure from the July 24 evening performance during intermission due to illness, according to People, who was in attendance. The announcement was made to the audience shortly before the second act was set to begin.
Zegler, 24, had already completed a full matinee performance earlier that day. Her departure paved the way for her understudy, Bella Brown, to step into the iconic role of Eva Perón. Brown, who had appeared in the first act in the smaller role of Perón’s Mistress, took center stage for the remainder of the show, which has been earning rave reviews since its opening.
A Star is Born in Act 2
Brown almost immediately had to perform the musical’s most famous song, “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” In director Jamie Lloyd’s unique staging, the performer sings the number live on the actual balcony of the London Palladium, while a camera projects the performance to the audience inside.
According to reports, Brown delivered a stunning rendition that earned her a massive reception. People noted that she “completely nailed the number” and carried the “electricity, intensity and vulnerability” Zegler had established in Act 1.
The audience responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. Following the show’s conclusion, Brown and the company received a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes, taking about ten curtain calls due to the thunderous applause, as reported by The Independent. One audience member later wrote, “It was amazing seeing Rachel tonight, but Bella Brown was SENSATIONAL. I’m actually glad we got to see her do the second act!”
“Pillars of a Show”
In the wake of her triumphant performance, Brown took to Instagram to graciously celebrate the moment and emphasize the vital role of understudies in the theater industry. “Today really showed just how important swings and covers are within this industry,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “They are pillars of a show!! A proud day to be at @officialevita.” In a subsequent post, she affectionately referred to Zegler as “MY ANGEL REG ZEG!!”
The experience highlighted a sentiment Zegler herself has expressed about the production’s supportive company. At the time of the show’s opening, Zegler posted on Instagram about the cast, calling them “triple threats in every sense of the word” and “wildly inspiring to witness.” She has called the opportunity to star in the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic a lifelong dream, telling Deadline that “the stage has always felt like home to me,” a sentiment that was embodied by the entire company’s stellar performance on Thursday night.
