Inside Tom Selleck’s California Ranch That the Blue Bloods Star Says Keeps Him ‘Sane’

For more than four decades, Tom Selleck has been one of television’s most enduring leading men, yet the “Blue Bloods” star has always managed to avoid the usual trappings of Hollywood fame. His secret weapon? A quiet, rugged life far from the spotlight. Tucked away in Ventura County, California, the 65-acre ranch he’s owned since 1988 isn’t just where he lives—it’s how he lives.

Tom Selleck’s Ranch Has a Rich Hollywood Past

When Selleck and his wife, Jillie Mack, bought their Spanish colonial-style estate in 1988 for just over $5 million, they were looking for a lifestyle reset following his exit from “Magnum, P.I.” The ranch had some serious star power before Selleck arrived—Dean Martin once owned the property before selling it in 1969 to car dealer Fletcher Jones. But for Selleck, the land itself—not the pedigree—was the draw.

The property includes eight bedrooms, staff accommodations, a heliport, stables, a pool, a tennis court, and even a three-hole golf course. But the real magic is outside. The land is home to more than 1,500 trees, many of which Selleck planted and continues to care for himself.

“I do grunt work and I make the rounds,” he told People. “I like watching things grow. It’s a retreat.”

Selleck, now 80, says that life on the ranch has been essential to his well-being.

“My relationships and my ranch keep me sane,” he explained. “I’m a fairly private person.”

He and Jillie raised their daughter, Hannah Selleck, on the property alongside his son, Kevin Selleck, from his previous marriage to Jacqueline Ray.

The Former Blue Bloods Star Talks Life, Cancellation, and Keeping His Ranch

Life on the ranch hasn’t always been idyllic. In 2024, Selleck revealed that years of drought had devastated several of his avocado trees and more than 20 oaks.

“That just breaks your heart,” he told People. “But with the rain we’ve had, the sick ones are getting better, and they’re all sprouting a lot of healthy growth.”

Over the years, Selleck has developed a deep appreciation for the land and its rhythms.

“I’ve planted [wildflowers] for years and they bloom in cycles,” he said. “When it’s coldest, one of them blooms and then another one comes in. I know it sounds stupid, but I just watch them grow.”

But with “Blue Bloods” ending after season 14 in 2024, the future of the ranch has become less certain.

“Hopefully I keep working enough to hold onto the place,” Selleck told CBS Sunday Morning “Am I set for life? Yeah, but maybe not on a 63-acre ranch!”

According to Closer Weekly, the actor was blindsided by CBS’s decision to cancel the long-running series. “They’ve still got a lot of story lines to explore,” a source told the outlet. “It seems a bit premature.”

Selleck hasn’t given up hope for a last-minute reversal:

“I will continue to think that CBS will come to their senses,” he said.
