Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are one of the most enduring couples in Hollywood. Yesterday, they both took to Instagram to celebrate their 37th anniversary, giving each other endearing shoutouts.
They Shared Loving Messages & Adorable Photos
Alongside a selfie of the two grinning in their swimming suits, Hanks captioned: “37 years married. Today! Love you, Mrs. -Mr.THanks”
Wilson chose a chillier scene for her photo, which featured Hanks bundled up in a green beanie, a red scarf, and sunglasses. Wilson, who was dressed just as comfortably in a black beanie, stood in front of him, smiling happily. “Happy 37th Anniversary my love!!!” She wrote, along with 37 different colored hearts.
Hanks and Wilson met on the set of Bosom Buddies in 1981, when Wilson played Henry’s (Peter Scolari) Satanist date Cindy. Hanks was married to Samantha Lewes at the time, and was a father to Colin. Their daughter, Elizabeth Ann (E.A.), was born a year later. He made quite an impression on Wilson, with her recalling to People that “when we met, that we just got along instantly.”
Several years later, they met again on the set of Volunteers. At that point, the marriage of Hanks and Lewes was crumbling, but he felt a connection to Wilson. “Rita and I just looked at each other and — kaboing — that was that,” Hanks told GQ (per People). “I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.”
The two got married in 1987 and went on to have Chet and Truman. They key to their successful marriage? “I wish there was a secret, you know. We just like each other. You start there,” Hanks told People in 2015.
Their Friends Swarmed the Comments With Well Wishes
\While Hanks’ comments were turned off, Wilson’s were not. This meant lots of anniversary messages — and emojis — from fans, friends, and loved ones on Wilson’s photo. Many of the couple’s famous friends also left comments. “Happy happy my loves you both are awesome love you,” Maria Shriver wrote. “Happy anniversary lovers!” Daisy Fuentes commented, while her husband, Richard Marx, posted three hearts.
Others, such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Demi Moore, Octavia Spencer, Elizabeth Perkins, and Kristin Chenoweth, skipped the words and posted lots of heart emojis.
While none of their kids posted any comments, the family is very close. Wilson commented on E.A.’s page the day before with the heartwarming “So proud of you!!!!” So it’s likely the family also celebrated off social media.
