‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: How To Watch The Series Finale and What to Expect

*Spoilers ahead for Season 6 Finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

The season finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is right around the corner, and many fans don’t know what to expect. But they have eagerly been searching online for any clues. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, the Hulu original series has been making waves since it came out in 2017. It has been following the life of June Osborne, also known as Offred, which is now coming to a close. (Or so we know?)

The show became an instant success, with the first season winning a total of eight Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series. Elisabeth Moss, who plays Offred, won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series.

The show also stars several well-known actors, including Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, and more.

When and Where Can You Watch the Finale

The long-running series will conclude with Season 6, Episode 10. It will be released on Hulu on May 27, 2025, at midnight Eastern time. The show is expected to end with the end of June’s story, which will set up a storyline for its spinoff series, “The Testaments.” According to showrunners Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman, the finale will deliver an honest and emotional end to the battle with Gilead.

Just last week, a major plot twist shocked viewers after two main characters were eliminated. Fans were stunned when writers killed off Commander Nick Blaine, portrayed by Max Minghella, and Commander Joseph Lawrence, played by Bradley Whitford. Lawrence planted a bomb aboard a plane carrying Gilead’s top male leaders. The harrowing scene became one of the most powerful in the show’s history. This is due to Lawrence’s betrayal to Nick and his ultimate sacrifice.

Madeline Brewer Speaks Out About The Finale

Recently, Brewer, who portrays Janine, spoke to PEOPLE about the series finale and closing this chapter of her career.

“So I started on ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ when I was 24, and I just turned 33 last week,” Brewer told the outlet. “So it’s quite a bit of time spent together, a lot of growing up. My frontal lobe wasn’t cooked yet when we started.”

“She’s so much a part of me. But we’re so different. I think in a lot of ways on the surface, she’s much gentler than I am, but she’s also much stronger than I am. I really admire her.”

Brewer said that although it was hard to say goodbye to her character after so many years, she felt the journey had come to a full circle.

“I’ve given her everything I can give her, she’s given me everything she’s supposed to give me, and it’s a natural ending,” she said. “It’s time for us to move on.”

Spoiler alert: Brewer shared that the cast wrapped filming under a bridge in the middle of nowhere in Canada, in freezing temperatures at three in the morning.

“It wasn’t particularly emotional though,” she added. “For some people it was, like Yvonne [Strahovski] was a mess, but I know for me, it’s just time to move on.”

Elisabeth Moss Commits to the Role

As for Moss, she discussed the project during an appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” revealing that she initially turned down the role of June twice before accepting it.

“I wasn’t quite sure if I was ready to make that commitment again, so I actually passed the first time they offered it to me. I know, it seems insane now,” she said. “I’m so glad I’ve corrected that. And then they came back, and they very nicely offered it again, blah, blah, blah.”

She admitted she couldn’t stand the idea of anyone else playing June. This ultimately led her to say yes.

“It was the thing that made me realize that I needed to do it. I couldn’t stand the idea of anyone else playing that role, you know what I mean? That was the thing that made me realize how badly I wanted to do it.”

The series finale of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will air Tuesday, May 27, on Hulu.
