Fans of Amazon Prime series ‘The Chosen’ can now watch Season Five from the comfort of their living rooms.
Season Five debuted on the streaming service Sunday, June 15. For the uninitiated, “The Chosen” is a series focused on the life of Jesus Christ and His inner circle, including His twelve disciples and others.
Viewers have had the chance to view season five in theaters, as they had seasons three and four. According to Deadline, the theatrical release of the three seasons has grossed more than $140 million worldwide.
Show creator Dallas Jenkins told People why he thinks the show has found so much success where other faith-based programs have not.
“I think it’s pretty extraordinary for a TV show,” Jenkins told People. “It is just really cool to see a television show, especially a first century historical drama, get recognized in popular culture as something that is worth seeing on its own merits, not just as a niche Jesus project that churchgoers can appreciate on a weekend.”
Season Five of ‘The Chosen’ Focuses on The Last Supper
Season five of the historical drama focuses on The Last Supper as told in the Bible in the Gospels of Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-25 and Luke 22:7-38.
And while each season has focused on a specific time period in Jesus’ life, show creator Dallas Jenkins told People that Season Five was “produced on a much grander scale.”
“Our approach isn’t any different [in Season Five]. We’re still focusing on the intimate, the personal, the organic, the authentic relationships. It’s just on a much bigger scale now because we’re in Jerusalem and a million people are all gathered, all [Jesus’] enemies, all his friends are all gathered along with the religious leaders and the Roman occupiers in one place in the course of one week.”
Jenkins explained the underlying question in season five like this: “Can you trust and follow even when you don’t understand? The disciples do not understand what is happening. Jesus is, in fact, telling them what is going to happen.”
Seasons Six & Seven Will Feature Two Stand-Alone Films
According to Deadline, “The Chosen” will return to its theatrical release formula for both the Season Six finale and the Season Seven debut.
The Season Six finale will portray the crucifixion of Jesus found in all four Gospels of the Bible: Matthew 27:27-44, Mark 15:16-32, Luke 23:26-43, and John 19:16-27. The episode will be a stand-alone feature film debuting in theaters on March 12, 2027.
Episode one of Season Seven will focus on Jesus’ resurrection three days after His crucifixion found in the Bible in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and John 20. That episode will also be a stand-alone feature film, debuting in theaters March 31, 2028.
Amazon MGM Studios is producing both films.
Jenkins says the show appeals to a broad range of viewers, not just Christians. He told People, “We’re really excited about the fact that people are just watching it as a television show. And whether you’re a believer or a churchgoer or not, this is a project that’s worth watching and enjoying as a historical drama.”
