Elizabeth Moss Addresses Taylor Swift Cameo Rumors in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

Fans began to speculate that Taylor Swift had a surprise cameo in Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” causing the star of the show Elizabeth Moss to address the rumors.

The rumor started after an unidentified member of the Mayday rebellion got out of a vehicle in Episode 9, leaving fans convinced it was Swift’s silhouette.

Moss told TVLine in a May 23 interview that while she loved the idea of Swift making an appearance, it wasn’t the 35-year-old superstar.

“That’s amazing! Of course it’s not [Swift]. Of course it’s not her,” Moss said regarding the rumors. “Oh my God, that’s hilarious.”

The 42-year-old actress said she loved the idea of it being Swift, and that is what makes her fans, dubbed Swifties, so great.

“But this is why, one of the reasons we were so excited about this moment, just the fan engagement on Handmaid’s is so intense, and then marrying that with the Swifties is like, Jesus Christ. It’s so fun!” Moss sdded. “So no, I’m afraid that’s not Taylor. She’s pretty busy. I feel like if she was going to come do our show, we would’ve made sure we saw her face.”

Swift Debuts News Song

Though Swift’s did not appear in the show, she debuted a brand new re-recorded version of “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)” off of her wildly popular “Reputation” album.

Showrunner Eric Tuchman told British magazine HELLO! how the the use of Swift’s track came to be.

“Our cast and crew are filled with Swifties and I know Elisabeth Moss has been looking for an opportunity to include one of Taylor’s songs on the show,” he noted.

He made the revelation it was Moss who was actually able to secure permission to use the track. Tuchman said “[Moss] was able to speak to Taylor’s people to get permission to use the song – and we’re thrilled.”

The Cast Attended The Eras Tour

Moss praised the singer while speaking with Billboard in a May 20 interview on the opportunity to use one of unreleased songs.

Taylor has been such an inspiration to me personally,” Moss said. “As a Swiftie myself, and I think I can speak for [co-star] Yvonne [Strahovski] and our entire cast as well, who are all Swifties, it’s such an honor to be able to use her music in the final episodes of our show.”

Moss along with cast members of “The Handmaid’s Tale” attended Swift’s Eras tour when it stopped in Toronto in November 2024.

The show’s Instagram released a picture of Moss and co-star Bradley Whitford, who plays Commander Lawrence, when they attended the concert last year.
