The Sundance Film Festival (which presented Lionel Richie’s Documentary in 2024) is about to make its biggest change ever. After nearly 40 years in Park City, Utah the legendary film festival is officially relocating to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. Yep, for the first time in decades, Sundance is switching things up. Will this be a good move for the iconic film celebration?
The Sundance Film Festival
If you’re into film (or just love a good underdog success story), you know The Sundance Film Festival is the place for independent cinema. Founded in 1981 by actor Robert Redford (as The Sundance Institute), the festival has launched some of the most iconic indie films of all time; think “Get Out,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” and “Whiplash.” It’s where up-and-coming filmmakers get their shot, where industry insiders hunt for the next big thing, and where film lovers get to experience movies before the rest of the world catches on.
Beyond the films, Sundance is an experience. There are Panels, Q&As, unexpected celebrity sightings; and we can’t forget that electric feeling of discovering a new movie before it blows up in the mainstream media.
Where Sundance Is Going
But starting in 2027, Sundance is leaving its roots behind and setting up shop in Boulder, Colorado. Originally announced in 2024, “Sundance organizers said the festival’s [latest] 10-year lease with Park City would end in 2027,” and “they were looking for a new host city,” says NPR. “More than 100 locations indicated they were interested” and Boulder checked all the right boxes. It’s got a thriving arts scene, breathtaking mountain views, and a walkable downtown area (centered around the always-lively Pearl Street Mall). Plus, screenings will take place on the University of Colorado campus, adding to the festival’s accessible and community-driven vibe.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis is very excited about the move telling AP News, “in our state we celebrate the arts and film industry” and “with the addition of the iconic Sundance Film Festival, we can expect even more jobs, a huge benefit for our small businesses including stores and restaurants.”
Robert Redford Weighs In
Even Robert Redford has given his blessing, “This move will ensure that the Festival continues its work of risk taking, supporting innovative storytellers, fostering independence, and entertaining and enlightening audiences.” he said in a statement (per AP News). The actor explained that he is “grateful to the Boulder community for its support” and “look[s] forward to seeing what the future holds for the Festival there.” It’s a big shift, but it’s also a chance for Sundance to evolve while keeping its indie spirit alive.
Change is always a little weird, but this move feels like a win. Boulder offers everything that makes Sundance special; gorgeous scenery, a passionate creative community, and that perfect mix of intimate and exciting. If you’ve ever dreamed of going, 2027 might just be the year to do it. New city… same Sundance magic.
Note: The 2026 Sundance Film Festival is set to be held in Utah as originally scheduled.
