After 50 unforgettable years of roller coasters, family fun, and Bay Area memories, Six Flags California’s Great America may soon be preparing to close its gates for good.
As per a report in the Orange County Register, Six Flags chief financial officer Brian Witherow confirmed the possibility during the company’s Investor Day 2025 on May 20.

He stated, “Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season.”
The beloved Santa Clara, California, park could shut down after the 2027 Halloween season, though Six Flags has yet to announce an official closure date.
Lease Expiration Could Bring an End to the Bay Area Park
California’s Great America first opened in 1976 as Marriott’s Great America. In 2024, parent company Cedar Fair merged with Six Flags in an $8 billion deal.
As per BlooLoop, Cedar Fair sold the 112-acre site to Prologis, a real estate and supply chain logistics company, for $310 million, entering into a lease-back agreement for a term of six to 11 years in 2022.

As reported by People, the current lease expires on June 30, 2028, with an option to extend for an additional five years to 2033. So far, no lease extension has been confirmed.
“These are two parks that are very low on the ranking of margins,” Witherow said of California’s Great America and Six Flags America in Maryland, which is also set to close after the 2025 season.
A Partnership With Prologis Could Transform the Land
“We chose Prologis as our partner because of their deep ties in the Bay Area and their reputation for working closely with local communities on large developments,” former Cedar Fair president and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said in a June 2022 press release.
Prologis is already making plans for the site’s future. “We’re focused on identifying and partnering with planning and design experts to help us create a master plan for the property,” spokesperson Jennifer Nelson told the Los Angeles Times in January.
Sister Park in Chicago Will Continue to Celebrate 50 Years
While the West Coast park faces a possible closure, its Midwestern counterpart, Six Flags Great America outside Chicago, will celebrate its 50th season with new enhancements.
For now, California’s Great America remains open. Fans and parkgoers can still enjoy the rides and attractions through the 2027 season unless a lease extension is finalized. A bittersweet chapter for one of Northern California’s iconic amusement parks may soon come to a close, but for now, the roller coasters still roar on.
