Scarlett Johansson has spent most of her life in the public eye, but when it comes to her kids, she’s setting firm boundaries. In a new interview with InStyle, the Marvel star got real about why she keeps her children out of the spotlight. Johansson, who shares 10-year-old daughter Rose with ex Romain Dauriac, and 3-year-old son Cosmo with husband Colin Jost, made it clear that their privacy isn’t up for discussion; no matter how famous she is.
Family Comes First
While Johansson isn’t afraid to speak out on important issues, her approach to her personal life is much more guarded. “If anyone knows me, I definitely over-share. I’m not a closed book, you know?” she explained, “’I’m politically active and vocal about it. But I am a private person in the sense that I value my close friendships. My family is very precious to me, as is their privacy. The anonymity of my children is very precious to me.”
In an industry where oversharing can feel like the norm, Johansson is intentional about keeping her children’s lives as normal as possible. She’s spent decades navigating fame, and she knows exactly how much it takes away.
Fame Isn’t a Choice for Kids
Johansson also shared a conversation she had with her daughter, Rose, who asked if she could appear in videos for The Outset, Johansson’s skincare brand. While a lot of celebrity parents might say yes, Johansson shut it down fast. She explained that “The thing about being a public figure is that the idea of being recognizable and celebrated feels fun, but then you can never stuff it back in the bottle.”
For Johansson, protecting her kids’ anonymity isn’t just about keeping them safe now; it’s about making sure they have the freedom to decide if they want to be public figures when they’re older. She noted, “The reality of it is, there’s a massive loss to that, you know? So I think preserving that for as long as possible until it’s someone’s choice, that’s the choice I make as far as my kids go.”
And she’s not wrong. It’s easy to see how growing up in the spotlight affects celebrity kids, whether it’s paparazzi following them around or strangers online forming opinions about their lives before they’re even old enough to understand what’s happening. Johansson wants no part of that for her kids.
What’s Next for Johansson?
At the end of the day, Johansson is just another mom trying to give her children the most normal upbringing she can. In a world where fame and social media go hand in hand, her stance is refreshing. Instead of letting the industry dictate what’s normal for her family, she’s setting her own rules; and sticking to them. And we fully support that.
Johansson has two films currently in pre-production: “The Gauntlet,” a remake of the 1977 action-thriller of the same name, and “Featherwood,” a film about an ex-addict who goes undercover to help the FBI, neither of which have a release date yet. Fans of the actress can also see her soon in “The Phoenician Scheme,” a spy thriller directed by Wes Anderson, which is due out May 30, 2025, and “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” the next installment of the “Jurassic” franchise, set to release July 2, 2025.
