Sarah Michelle Gellar Posts Exciting Update on ‘Buffy’ Reboot

When it comes to reboots, fans always have wildly mixed responses. Some loved the show so much that they are all in favor of either a do-over or a continuation of the story. Then some loved the show so much that they are adamant that no one should ever touch it again, because it was perfect just as it was.

Luckily for fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” not only is Sarah Michelle Gellar producing the reboot, but her recent Instagram post shows that our favorite slayer is returning for it, as well. Gellar has always remained protective of her “Buffy” legacy. Her participation both behind the scenes and in front of the camera should calm the nerves of many fans.

The Reboot Had Its First Table Read

On July 22, Sarah Michelle Gellar posted two notable Instagram photos. In the first, we see a place marker for Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze “BUFFY SUMMERS.” In the next photo is a script, with a “Buffy” action figure sitting nearby. On the script is written: “7/21/25 – Table Read.” The title of the show has been blocked out, but a table read is a sign that the pilot is finally moving forward.

So far, Hulu has only ordered the pilot for the reboot, not a whole series. The pilot episode is written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao. The Zuckermans are also the showrunners.

Little is known about the reboot, except that Gellar is returning and a new slayer has been cast. 15-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, best known for the series “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” and the “Firestarter” remake, has been cast as the lead slayer.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Says The Reboot Will Be ‘Lighter’ Than the Original

“For so many years, I said no to a possible return of the series,” she said. “I didn’t want to reintroduce something we had already seen. I waited for the right time to come. Then Chloé, a big “Buffy” fan, proposed the project to me, and I accepted. The gestation was long. It’s been three years, and we’re still working on it.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gellar explained why she finally said yes to a new “Buffy.”

The most significant difference Gellar sees between the original series and the reboot is the humor.

“It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original,” she said. “We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

Now that we know a table read has happened, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that more of the cast will soon be revealed.
