Well, Space is definitely an option for Rob Lowe. The “Parks and Rec” star opened up about the possibility of him becoming an “astronaut” while on a recent episode of “Hot Mics With Billy Bush.”
Believe it or not, the actor revealed that he’s actually spoken with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin team about potentially traveling to visit the aliens up above. “Wouldn’t it be sick?” the actor admitted.
Rob Lowe & The ‘Overview Effect’
Lowe may be ready to trade Hollywood for the stratosphere, at least for 11 minutes. Though no official invitation has been extended yet, Lowe made it quite clear. If offered the chance, he’d probably take it. And no, his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, isn’t exactly thrilled by the idea.
“She’s not into it,” he admitted, but that hasn’t stopped him from dreaming big—or, rather, dreaming up.
Lowe isn’t just in it for the bragging rights, oh no. The actor got philosophical when reflecting on what a spaceflight would mean to him. He echoed sentiments similar to those shared by past Blue Origin flyers.
“The minute we’re reminded that we are all just citizens of the earth is the minute that we begin to recognize our similarities and our shared humanity,” Lowe said. “I don’t mean to be too highfalutin about it, but I actually really believe that.”
He also expressed hope that experiencing the Earth from above could offer a perspective worth sharing. “I think it would be valuable,” he said. “I want to see it so I can communicate with it.”
Blue Origin’s Celebrity-Fueled Flights
If Lowe does blast off to space, he’ll join an exclusive crew of celebrity space tourists who’ve partnered with Blue Origin’s New Shepard missions. In April 2025, the company sent its 31st mission. It was an all-female flight, to the edge of space, with a lineup that included Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez (Bezos’ then fiancée, now wife), former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, producer Kerianne Flynn, and astronaut-activist Amanda Nguyen.
That trip sparked as much backlash as it did headlines. Because, well, after a few minutes Perry was ready to call herself a self-proclaimed astronaut. Critics, including actors Olivia Munn and Emily Ratajkowski, slammed the expedition as frivolous and self-serving. “What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?” Munn asked on “Today With Jenna and Friends.”
Blue Origin defended the mission, noting that Bowe and Nguyen conducted real-time research during the brief excursion. Which we don’t doubt since the trip had to have been done for something. So we’re pretty sure there was at least a little bit of data taken.
But King, too, pushed back against the criticism, telling Extra, “Every time one of those goes up, you get some information that can be used for something else.”
Despite the scrutiny, the allure of space and the chance to see Earth from a cosmic distance hasn’t lost its shine for stars like Lowe.
Lift-Off or Just Lifted Spirits?
While his wife may be grounded in her opposition, which we totally agree with, Lowe is clearly captivated by the idea. And whether or not he boards a Blue Origin rocket, he’s already aligned himself with a broader movement of public figures using space travel to inspire or at least start a conversation.
So is he really ready to strap in and shoot beyond the Kármán line? Well, if Blue Origin or Bezos calls, don’t be surprised if he decides to answer with confidence: “Let’s go!”
Until then, Lowe is keeping both feet on Earth, which we are thankful for. But his eyes are definitely on the stars!
