Ryan Murphy is diving into the dark, glittery underworld of 1980s Los Angeles in his latest series, The Shards. Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’ 2021 psychological thriller, the FX project is already generating buzz, especially with the casting of Richard Gere’s son, Homer James Jigme Gere, in a key role.

As per Variety, Homer, 25, will play Robert Mallory, the mysterious new student at the elite Buckley prep school. This marks his first major acting role.
What Is ‘The Shards’ About?

Set in 1981, “The Shards” follows a teenage Bret Easton Ellis during his senior year of high school in Los Angeles. As a serial killer — dubbed “The Trawler” — terrorizes the city, Bret becomes increasingly suspicious of the enigmatic new kid, Robert Mallory, who’s been welcomed into his inner circle.
Told through the lens of an older Bret recalling that chilling year, the story blends psychological horror with coming-of-age nostalgia, wrapped in Ellis’ signature tension and style.
Serialized initially as an audiobook on Ellis’s podcast, “The Shards” was released as a full novel in 2021. According to a report published in May by Deadline, a TV adaptation was first in development at HBO, but the project has since moved to FX under Murphy’s creative helm.
Who’s in the Cast of ‘The Shards’?

According to Variety, Igby Rigney will take on the role of young Bret Easton Ellis. Rigney is no stranger to genre television, having starred in several Mike Flanagan projects, including “Midnight Mass”, “The Midnight Club”, and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. Joining him is Homer James Jigme Gere as Robert Mallory. In a fun twist, Kaia Gerber also joins the cast.

Kaia is the daughter of Cindy Crawford, who was married to Richard Gere in the 1990s. Her role is still under wraps. Newcomer Graham Campbell will play Thom, Bret’s best friend. Like Homer, this marks Campbell’s first television role.
When Will ‘The Shards’ Premiere?
There’s no official premiere date yet for ‘The Shards’. FX confirmed the project’s move in May 2025, and with casting announced in July, the team is expected to begin production later this year. The series could premiere as early as 2026.
Inside Richard Gere’s Bond With Son Homer

Richard Gere has long kept his family life private, especially when it comes to his son, Homer James Jigme Gere. He welcomed Homer in 2000 with his second wife, Carey Lowell, whom he married in 2002 and divorced in 2013 after 11 years together. Before that, Gere famously married supermodel Cindy Crawford, and the two were together from 1991 to 1995.

He also became stepfather to Lowell’s daughter, Hannah, and once said being a stepdad helped him overcome fears about parenthood. “It helped me move past any fears I had about having children,” Gere told The Independent in 2007. By 2008, Gere was vocal about the joys of fatherhood, saying of Homer, “He fills me with joy… That’s love, too.”
