Starz confirmed the eighth and final season of “Outlander” more than two years ago, but it will be a while before fans will get to see it. A premiere date has yet to be announced, and author Diana Gabaldon is still writing the last book in her long-running series. There is a close partnership between showrunners and Gabaldon, so certain details will make it into the show before the last book is published. No one knows how the story will end — but we do know who will be in the cast.
The Main Cast and Crew of ‘Outlander’ Will Return For Season 8
The final season of “Outlander” will feature 10 episodes to give the show’s beloved characters a proper sendoff. Executive producers Ronald D. Moore, Matthew B. Roberts, and Maril Davis are on board for season 8. And, of course, the four main stars of the show will be back to wrap up the epic, time-traveling love story of Jamie and Claire Fraser.
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe will, of course, take their final turns as Jamie and Claire. Starring alongside the popular on-screen couple is Sophie Skelton as Brianna “Bree” Fraser MacKenzie and Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie.
Who Else is Returning for Season 8?
A lengthy list of cast members will be returning for the final season along with Heughan, Balfe, Skelton, and Rankin. Fan favorite John Bell is reprising his role of Ian Fraser Murray, as is David Berry as Lord John Grey.
Four cast members who joined the show in season 7 will be returning for season 8. Charles Vandervaart will be back as William Ransom, and Dairmaid Murtgagh is back as William “Buck” MacKenzie. Izzy Meikle-Small is returning as Rachel Hunter, along with Joey Phillips as Dr. Denzell Hunter.
Caitlin O’Ryan will be back as Lizzie Wemyss, along with Paul Gorman who portrays identical twin brothers Keziah and Josiah Beardsley. Gary Lamont will be reprising the role of Evan Lindsay.
César Domboy has also been confirmed to be returning in the role of Fergus Claudel Fraser. And, Lauren Lyle will be back as Marsali MacKimmie.
‘Outlander’ Cast Members Coming and Going
Three actors will be joining the cast for the final season of “Outlander.” Carla Woodcock will appear as Amaranthus Grey, a new member of the Grey family. Kieran Bew has signed on to play the role of Captain Charles Cunningham, a retired British soldier.
The third confirmed addition to the cast in season 8 is Frances Tomelty, who will star as Captain Charles Cunningham’s mother, Elspeth Cunningham.
There is one actor who will not be back for the final season. Kristin Atherton, who played Jenny Fraser Murray, is leaving the show after her character turned down Jamie’s invite to North Carolina at the end of season 7. Laura Donnelly previously played Jenny.
Tobias Menzies will not be a part of season 8, either, as both of his characters were killed off long ago. Black Jack died in season 3, and Frank died in season 4. He has not appeared on “Outlander” since.
The first seven seasons of “Outlander” are now available to stream on Starz.
