Before taking charge in the chaotic ER of “The Pitt”, Wyle rose to fame as med student-turned-doctor John Carter on ER, NBC’s iconic medical drama. From 1995 to 1999, he earned five consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor — all while donning scrubs during the show’s golden era.

Though he’s yet to win an Emmy, Wyle’s mantle isn’t bare. His work on ER earned him four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and his performance in The Pitt recently earned him a Gotham TV Award.

‘The Pitt’ Cast Celebrates 13 Emmy Nominations While Filming Season 2

After “The Pitt” earned an impressive 13 Emmy nominations on Tuesday, July 15, the cast learned the exciting news while filming season 2.

In a series of touching behind-the-scenes videos shared on social media, the cast and crew erupted in cheers as each of their nominations was announced.

Stars Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa were visibly emotional, taking in the moment as their names were read aloud and their castmates applauded around them.

In addition to Wyle and LaNasa’s nods, Shawn Hatosy was also recognized. The show scored a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, while writers Joe Sachs and R. Scott Gemmill, along with directors Amanda Marsalis and John Wells, were also honored for their work.

Inside The Pitt: One Day, One Hospital, All Heart

Created with a high-concept twist, “The Pitt” unfolds entirely over one day at an underfunded, understaffed Pittsburgh trauma hospital. Wyle stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the senior attending physician overseeing the day shift as the staff braces for a mass casualty event, mounting exhaustion, & unresolved personal trauma.

Unlike ER, which often splits time between the doctors’ lives and patients’ stories, The Pitt stays laser-focused on the toll emergency medicine takes on its providers, especially as Robby wrestles with grief, burnout, & the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, Wyle revealed that The Pitt was born out of discussions about reviving ER. Alongside ER executive producer John Wells and co-EP R. Scott Gemmill, Wyle engaged in early talks with Michael Crichton’s estate about revisiting the beloved series.

“We were close enough that we were in the rights conversation with the Crichton camp that broke down,” he said. “And that’s how we got to where we are.”

When to Watch the 2025 Emmy Awards

The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and air Sunday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC. Wyle is nominated alongside a powerhouse group of actors — but win or lose, his return to the Emmy spotlight is already one of the season’s standout stories.
