Malcolm-Jamal Warner died in a tragic accident while on vacation with his family in Costa Rica. The news was announced on July 20. He was 54.

Warner was incredibly private about his wife and daughter, choosing not to share personal details, including their names, publicly, but he did speak about them with great affection. Warner discussed his wife and how he knew she was the one for him on the “Hot & Bothered” podcast in June. “I met my wife through a mutual friend,” he said. “Because I was on this hiatus, I was like, I’m not really dating.”
He continued, “At some point, I was like, if I’m going to have a kid, this is the person I would want to have it with. I also realized that if something happened and we weren’t together romantically, she would still be the person I would want to raise a child with, co-parent with.”
Warner posted several photos of his daughter on Instagram. The images show a beautiful bond between Warner and his child.
In an Instagram post from September 21, 2018, Warner shared several photos of his daughter, giving a glimpse into his family life. In the caption, he also commented on the support system they have to help raise her.
“We feel honored and blessed to be backed by a village of family and intimate friends to who love our daughter deeply and share in the honor our job to nurture, support, encourage, and protect her precious light,” he wrote.
Who Did Malcolm-Jamal Warner Consider Family?
The actor has given a glimpse into his life and the people he calls family with rare Instagram posts. In an Instagram post from June 13, Warner can be seen in pictures with April Sampe. “When we met, they were untouchable to me, now they are my family. I have never felt so welcomed in my life,” the caption reads.
There are other people whom Warner has referred to as family. In an Instagram post he made on May 17, he tagged actor Alimi Ballard. In the caption, he got emotional.
“There is SO much I want to add to this caption, but I’m a just let it rock on it’s own. Tribe. Fam,” he wrote. “Took this (photo) year ago today. Been on a text with these two jokers for about 6 years. 6 years of non stop encouragement, NON stop compassion, Light, CARE, Brotherhood, OBSCENE laughter, and sometimes simply holding space for each other.”
In an Instagram post from March 6, Warner was onstage, making music. He revealed that one of the people he was jamming with was his cousin. “It’s always always good to play onstage with my bros and cousin @landonamusic @dashillsmith @edgemuzik and @ikethompson,” he wrote in the caption. “I appreciate you brothers. Immensely.”
Warner also celebrated his close friend and “Not All Hood” podcast cohost Candace Kelley in an Instagram post.
