Since first leaving Scientology in July of 2013, Leah Remini has been outspoken about the practices of the church, while also insisting on building a new life that serves her well.
Her 2015 memoir, “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” and her Emmy-winning A&E docuseries, “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” have both helped to set her on a brand-new path, according to a new interview with Us Weekly, one that will culminate in a degree from NYU this fall.
Leah Remini Turned Her Life Upside Down by Moving Away From the Church

It has been years since Leah walked away from the organization, and she has most definitely paid a price when it comes to her privacy. Remini told Us Weekly in an interview published June 4, “It’s difficult to say it’s gotten easier when I have a multimillion-dollar organization terrorizing me and my family. I’m hunted. My daughter is followed. There is constant surveillance.”
She filed a lawsuit in August 2023 against the Church of Scientology, alleging that she and her 20-year-old daughter, Sofia (with ex Angelo Pagan), were being harassed and surveilled. A trial is on the docket for October 2025.
Leah Remini Is Embracing Her New Life
Despite all of the difficulties and hurdles, Leah Remini says that she has absolutely no regrets about leaving the Church. They haven’t necessarily made it easy for her, but Remini is determined to have a life on her own terms.
She told Us Weekly, “There are good days and bad days, but in general, it’s been worth it,” she says. “My heart has opened up so much.”
The actress was just 13 when her mother first joined the Church, and then she spent the next 30 years as a member. She is quick to credit therapy for helping her to heal from any damage that was done. It is an ongoing process but one that Leah is committed to.
She has also gone through other major changes in her life, like splitting from Angelo Pagan in August of 2024. The couple had been married for 28 years, so it was a huge adjustment for the actress.
She’s set to graduate from NYU in the fall with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, with the possibility of a new career ahead of her. Leah Remini has been through a lot, but she is also demonstrating that it is never too late to trade in your old life for one that feels like a better fit.
