In a surprising upset, the horse named Sovereignty narrowly bested Journalism to win the race.
Sovereignty’s jockey, Junior Alvarado, said he wanted to thank Jesus for the win.
Alvarado also described the priceless moment he got to facetime his mom right after clinching the crown. He said she was “very excited” and screaming “Thank you, God!”
The 38-year-old said his victory left him speechless. “I have no words,” said the champion.
