Stamp’s death was confirmed in a statement published online by Reuters on Sunday, sparking an outpouring of tributes across the film industry, including from BAFTA.

The London-born actor launched his career in 1962 with the seafaring drama Billy Budd, earning both Oscar & BAFTA nominations for his breakout role.

Over the next six decades, he built a career defined by both villainous and vulnerable characters.

Though his career included critically acclaimed turns such as Bernadette in 1994’s “The Adventures of Priscilla”, “Queen of the Desert”, Stamp became world-famous for his portrayal of General Zod in 1978’s Superman and its 1980 sequel Superman II.

As the formidable Kryptonian adversary to Christopher Reeve’s “Man of Steel”, Stamp brought a mix of menace, charm & humanity that reshaped how comic book villains were depicted on screen.

“The closer the camera moved, the more hypnotic his presence became. In close-up, his unblinking gaze locked in so powerfully that the effect was extraordinary. Terence was a true movie star: the camera loved him, and he loved it right back,” director Edgar Wright said in tribute.

Tributes From Co-Stars & Friends

Actor Bill Duke, who starred with Stamp in Steven Soderbergh’s 1999 crime drama “The Limey”, expressed his sorrow. “He brought a rare intensity to the screen, but off-screen he carried himself with warmth, grace, and generosity,” Duke wrote on Facebook.

Stamp was born in London’s East End on July 22, 1938. During the swinging ’60s, he lived a vibrant life and was romantically linked to actress Julie Christie and model Jean Shrimpton. In 2002, at age 64, he married Elizabeth O’Rourke, then 29, though the couple divorced six years later. Stamp never had children. As he grew older, his boyish good looks gave way to a rugged, weathered charm that made him stand out just as much.
