When Jason Sudeikis isn’t busy making movies and starring in hit TV shows like “Ted Lasso,” the Kansas native is back home in the Midwest spending quality time with his kids and revisiting his go-to comfort foods. From legendary barbecue joints to one under-the-radar Mexican fast food spot, Sudeikis has his local favorites dialed in. And yes, you can order exactly what he does. Here’s where the “Ted Lasso” star eats when he’s back in the KC metro.
Jason Sudeikis’ Ideal KC Barbecue Crawl
During a 2023 appearance on the hit YouTube series “Hot Ones,” host Sean Evans asked Sudeikis to describe his ideal Kansas City barbecue crawl. The actor didn’t hesitate to show his local pride, listing some of the city’s most iconic spots.
“I want burnt ends from, I’ll say, Gates. I’ll take pulled pork from Kansas City Joe’s. I’ll take any of the sides from Jack Stack. I’ll do Q39 for the turkey and I’ll do my brisket from Arthur Bryant’s,” Sudeikis revealed.
Sudeikis also gave a shoutout to Da Bomb Beyond Insanity, a fiery hot sauce made by Spicin Foods in Kansas City, Kansas. “It’s a great name. It’s a frightening bottle,” he joked, calling it a true point of pride for the region.
Restaurants like Arthur Bryant’s and Q39 were quick to share Sudeikis’ barbecue crawl picks on social media, thrilled to get a nod from one of KC’s most famous natives.
Why Taco Via Is a Must For the ‘Ted Lasso’ Star
Barbecue might be the obvious Kansas City choice, but Sudeikis has also shown love for a different kind of hometown restaurant: Taco Via. In 2021, the Ted Lasso Twitter account responded to a request from the US Men’s National Team for Kansas City area dining recommendations when they were in town for Gold Cup matches.
“Oh boy let me think here. Well obviously you can’t go wrong with the big four, aka Joe Arthur Gate Stack. But for y’all I gotta recommend Taco Via on 95th. Be sure to get the Sancho there. Has as much kick as Jadon,” he replied.
The Sancho is a flour tortilla stuffed with beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and the restaurant’s signature taco sauce.
Taco Via’s general manager Quentin Heilman called the mention “pretty amazing,” especially since the family-run restaurant relies almost entirely on word of mouth. Sudeikis reportedly visits the Overland Park location at 8896 W. 95th St. a few times a year, often with his kids.
According to Heilman, Sudeikis usually orders the daily special, which is a Sancho, a nacho, a hard-shell taco, and a medium drink for $10.99. He also grabs quarters to play pinball and other arcade games.
Jason Sudeikis and Co. Spotted Filming ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 in Kansas City
Kansas City locals got a thrill recently when filming began for Season 4 of “Ted Lasso” right in their own backyard. Social media buzzed as cast members Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham were spotted shooting scenes at the iconic Gates Bar-B-Q in midtown, with more filming reported on the Country Club Plaza and in the Blue Springs area.
Temple’s presence was especially noteworthy, as her return hadn’t yet been officially confirmed. Fans were excited to see her alongside Waddingham, with the two actresses photographed under umbrellas between takes.
While in Blue Springs, Sudeikis was on location, and locals told KCUR that it was a “really awesome” experience. They also noted that the “Saturday Night Live” alum thanked them when filming wrapped for letting the film crew use their homes.
Seasons 1 through 3 of “Ted Lasso” are now available to stream on Apple TV. A season 4 premiere date has not yet been announced.
