Jake Gyllenhaal Has Over $100,000 in Items in His Broadway Dressing Room

Jake Gyllenhaal is back on Broadway, playing Iago, the villain in Shakespeare’s play Othello.

With him spending so much time in the theater, he had to make sure that his dressing room was perfect. In an interview with Architectural Digest, he showed them his room at the Barrymore Theatre.

“I was told that it’s the dressing room that Marlon Brando was in for A Streetcar Named Desire. It has hundreds of layers of paint from every performer that has had or shared that room, and so it holds within it a deep, rich history that I am honored to be a part of and to add to, even if it’s temporary,” Gyllenhaal told Architectural Digest.

The author of the article, Charlotte Collins, went on to describe Gyllenhaal as having “a soft spot for design,” which led to his “elevated approach for the short-term dwelling.”

Jake Gyllenhaal Carefully Sourced Each Item

While the Architectural Digest details some of the items in Gyllenhaal’s dressing room, Page Six reported the prices of these pieces.

To start, he has a handmade chess set by Minjae Kim that costs $19,000.

Collins described it as “a stylish callout to the calculated gameplay characteristic of Iago, whose plotline is defined by his meticulous orchestration of Othello’s downfall.” On both sides of the chess board sits two chairs, one light and one dark, which represents a major part of Shakespeare’s play.

He also has a $22,000 19th-century French coffee table in his room, a Sophie Lou Jacobsen pendant light for $$9,200, and an $8,600 floral motif mirror, along with a $9,000 sofa and $18,000 set of bentwood barrel chairs.

The sofa, barrel chairs, and the coffee table were all sourced from Somerset House.

‘Othello” Breaks Broadway Box Office Records

The “Othello” revival starring Denzel Washington and Gyllenhaal became Broadway’s top-grossing play of all time, generating $2.8 million with eight preview performances, Deadline reported.

The record was previously held by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which generated more than $2.7 million when it came out in 2023.

Denzel Washington Is ‘Excited’ to Play ‘Othello’

In an interview with “CBS News Sunday Morning” on March 24, Washington and Gyllenhaal spoke about this project. And with that, Washington claimed that “it’s the most excited I’ve been this century.”

“Seriously. I haven’t been this excited about anything I’ve done as I am about this,” he continued.

As for Gyllenhaal, he said that the stage is “my favorite place to be.” And he teased what fans can expect when they come to see him perform.

“[Iago] does have a lot of moments [where] he has interactions with the audience; they kind of become his partner in it, and every night it is different,” Gyllenhaal said. “And that’s what I love so much about it.”
