A new documentary revisits the 2023 Titan sub tragedy with fresh footage and emotional insight. It offers a closer, more personal look at the deep-sea mission that ended in heartbreak.

“Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster” premiered on May 28 on Discovery and is now available to stream on demand via Discovery+ (with a free 7-day trial) or on Max through Prime Video and other streaming platforms.
The powerful two-hour special offers new insights, unseen footage, and raw interviews surrounding the final mission of OceanGate’s Titan sub. Eventually, it tragically imploded during a deep-sea dive to explore the Titanic wreck site.
Never-Before-Seen Footage and Personal Interviews
The documentary is led by global adventurer Josh Gates, who shares never-before-seen footage from inside the Titan, originally captured in 2021 while filming for his series Expedition Unknown.
That project was later shelved following an interview with Stockton Rush and a test dive that raised serious safety concerns, prompting Gates to halt production.
The special also includes firsthand accounts from technicians, deep-sea explorers, and close colleagues of Rush, focusing on warning signs and safety issues surrounding the submersible that were brought to light—but ultimately overlooked.
A Mission That Ended in Tragedy
On June 18, 2023, the Titan submersible imploded 3,800 meters below sea level in the North Atlantic during a mission to survey the Titanic wreckage. The vessel had been conducting annual deep-sea dives since 2021, chronicling the ship’s decay and the underwater ecosystem surrounding it.
All five passengers on board were killed in the implosion:
Stockton Rush, OceanGate’s CEO and pilot
Wendy Rush, OceanGate’s communications director, was in contact with her husband during the dive
Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Titanic expert
Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, a 19-year-old student
Discovery previously released a video teaser that included audio obtained by the U.S. Coast Guard, during which a loud bang is heard during communication between Wendy Rush and the sub.
What the Documentary Covers
“Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster” not only recounts the final moments of the Titan’s voyage. It also raises important questions about the future of deep-sea exploration.
The documentary offers “a detailed account of the final mission, culminating in the tragic implosion and igniting conversations about the necessary parameters of deep-sea exploration and safety protocol in the aftermath,” according to its logline.
