Idris Elba Returns to His College for a Full-Circle Moment

Actor and producer Idris Elba returned to Barking & Dagenham College this week for a milestone moment, unveiling a MOBO “Paving the Way” stone at the campus where he studied performing arts as a teen, according to The Independent. The stone honors Elba’s contributions to the arts and his impact on the next generation.

The “Luther” and “Hijack” star posed beside the engraved plaque, smiling proudly as he revisited the same grounds where his acting journey began. The moment marked a full-circle tribute to a place he credits with shaping his path in the industry.

Taking to Instagram, Elba reflected on the emotional visit and shared a message with current students: “Back where it all started. I want to say a huge thank you to all the staff, past and present, at Barking & Dagenham College. Yesterday was a special moment.”

He continued, “As a teenager, I walked through those doors with no clue how much my life was about to change. It was here I learned to believe in myself. That deep kind of belief you unlock when someone sees your potential and backs you.”

Elba Shares Advice with Students During the Tribute

Idris Elba attends the MOBO’s Paving The Way Stone photocall at Rush Green Campus on June 13, 2025 in London, England.

During a Q&A session, Elba was asked if he ever imagined becoming as successful as he is today. “I mean, yes,” he said. “To be here in the first place, you’re already imagining what the future can be. I didn’t know how to get there, but I could see it—in my idols, on the silver screen.”

He credited the college for keeping him grounded. “This was a safe space to fall down and get back up. We all found this place to be a haven where we could try, fail, and dream bigger every day.”

The commemorative stone includes one of Elba’s personal mantras: “Don’t get labelled. Labels are for cans.” The phrase is meant to inspire students to push beyond stereotypes and limitations.

MOBO founder Kanya King CBE was also present for the event and spoke about the broader goals of the “Paving the Way” initiative. She hinted that the honor may be tied to future scholarships or mentorship opportunities for young creatives, continuing the organization’s mission to recognize Black excellence and support rising talent.

Fans and Former Classmates Celebrate Elba’s Return

Following Elba’s Instagram post, fans and supporters flooded the comment section with messages of pride and admiration. The official MOBO Awards account wrote, “Full circle moments like this are what it’s all about. Honoured to celebrate your journey and legacy with you, Idris 🙌🏾🫶🏾🖤.”

Another user commented, “Love this 🫶🏾🔥👑 so important. Thank you for paving the way for us.” Others reflected on being part of the special day, with one user writing, “Big love ID!!! And a massive congratulations!! It was a privilege to be there to celebrate your achievements my brother!!”

One supporter added, “So proud to be a part of it @idriselba you so deserve this acknowledgement 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿.”

Elba’s visit marked not only a personal milestone but also a public moment of gratitude toward the community that supported his early dreams. The event at Barking & Dagenham College honored his legacy and reinforced his message to students: stay open, take chances, and keep going.

In his Instagram post he continued encouraging students saying, “To the students here now, and to the ones reading this: this is one of the best times of your life,” he said. “You might not see it yet, but trust me… dig in. Say yes to everything. Explore. Fail. Get back up. And most importantly, be the best version of you.”
