One of the most contentious topics in popular culture has been the ongoing situation between Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively. As fans know, this all stemmed from the “It Ends With Us” movie from 2024. Now, Justin Baldoni has received a degree of support from beloved actor James Brolin.

Of course, Justin Baldoni and James Brolin have a history with each other. Notably, James directed Justin in the 2021 short film, “Royal Reunion.” They have since maintained a close professional relationship.

James Brolin recently interviewed with PEOPLE about his career. During the conversation, he reflected on first working with Justin Baldoni. James said that during that time, “He asked so many questions, he was so helpful.”

The acclaimed actor and director continued, “But I didn’t realize he was learning, because very soon after that, this guy’s directing his own stuff. I’m so proud of Justin Baldoni because God, he’s written two wonderful books on being a man and being courteous and teaching boys not to fear their fears — and now he’s directed three movies.”

James added, “He started off with one episode of Jane the Virgin and now he’s directed three pictures and written two books and does TED talks to help people.”

Regarding the legal situation with Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively, James expressed confusion. He stated, “I don’t understand what’s going on right now, but I hope it works out.”

“It Ends With Us” hit theatres in August 2024. The film, based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, became an instant box office success. Notably, in addition to starring in the movie, Justin Baldoni also directed it. The cast is rounded out by Blake Lively, Jenny Slate, Brandon Sklenar, Hasan Minhaj, and more.

According to ABC News, fast forward to December of that year, and Blake Lively filed a complaint with the California Civil Rights Department. It was over sexual harassment and her belief that he and significant stakeholders in the film attempted to launch a smear campaign against her.

The New York Times later published an article, “We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine,” about the complaint, and Justin Baldoni then sued the outlet. This was at the end of December. He was seeking $250 million in damages. The same month, Blake formalized her complaint into a lawsuit.

This story doesn’t end there, as Justin Baldoni sued Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds in January 2025. Both Baldoni and Lively have experienced legal setbacks since filing, but they are due in court on March 9, 2026.
