Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s New Netflix Deal May Focus on Princess Diana

It looks like Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle may extend their lucrative deal with Netflix.

According to British newspaper “The Express,” the streaming giant is talking with the royal couple about a new contract. That contract is said to include producing a documentary about the prince’s mother, Princess Diana, on the 30th anniversary of her death.

The $100 million contract the Duke and Duchess of Sussex penned with Netflix in 2020 is set to expire later this year. But Meghan’s new lifestyle show “With Love, Meghan,” has done well for Netflix and is already renewed for season two.

Diana Documentary Would Be Produced and Narrated By Prince Harry

Sources tell “The Express” that the Diana documentary would be a two or three-part series. It would air in 2027 surrounding the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in a Paris car crash in 1997.

“The idea is that it would be a solo project for Harry, who would be a co-executive producer as well as hosting and narrating the series,” said the Express source, which the paper refers to as a Los Angeles production executive.

“He is uniquely placed, not only to talk about the woman he knew as his mother, but also to examine her role as an enduring social and cultural icon still beloved by so many,” the source goes on to say. “It’s felt that this is something he would handle with passion and sensitivity, offering fresh insights into not only her life, but also her lasting legacy.”

“The Express” source says Prince Harry may have another reason to like the idea. He may be viewing the documentary as a way to mend his strained relationship with older brother Prince William. “Nothing has been agreed yet but this is being talked about in an extremely positive way. Harry might even see it as a stepping stone to building bridges with William and the rest of his family.”

Insiders Say Any New Netflix Contract Will Be Performance-Based

Media experts say it’s unlikely a new Netflix deal will come with a massive upfront payment like the last one.

According to the “New York Post,” Netflix’s own data shows that “With Love, Meghan” landed the No. 10 spot globally. That show racked up 12.6 million hours watched in its first six days. Which pales in comparison to the 2022 Netflix documentary series “Harry & Meghan.” That series set a record with 81.5 million viewing hours in just four days.
