Netflix’s “The Four Seasons” wasn’t intended to exceed one season, but viewers had other plans. The heartfelt comedy, inspired by the 1981 film of the same name, struck a chord with audiences, quickly climbing to Netflix’s No. 1 spot for English-language TV.

Now, with Season 2 on the way, creator Tina Fey is opening up about what’s next — and whether there’s still a chance fans could see Steve Carell return.

Tina Fey recently sat down with Deadline to offer some answers — and a little hope.
Season 2 Will Keep the Same Format and Returning Writers
Fey confirmed that Season 2 will feature eight episodes and stick to the same format, with friends reconnecting at four different events.
The whole writing team from Season 1 is also back, which should help keep the tone and heart of the show intact. But when it comes to Carell’s return, the news isn’t quite as hopeful.
Even better, the entire writing staff from Season 1 is returning, helping to ensure the show keeps its heart and humor intact.
Tina Answers—Could Steve Carell Return?
The big question, of course, is whether Steve Carell could appear in Season 2. At the end of Season 1, Carell’s character Nick died — a move that surprised many fans, since it veered from the 1981 film version.
When asked if flashbacks could bring Nick back, Fey told Deadline: “I couldn’t possibly say. We have our format. I mean, of the many mistakes I’ve made in my career, killing him will hopefully go down as the biggest.”
Although Fey didn’t confirm anything, it seems likely that Nick’s death is permanent, and bringing him back might not align with the show’s tone or structure.
Why Nick’s Death Matters
Nick’s death brought real weight to “The Four Seasons”. It added emotional depth and gave the friends something genuine to process. In a story about aging, loss, and connection, his death felt authentic.

And while flashbacks might sound tempting, using them too much could lessen the emotional impact of Nick’s loss.
Can The Four Seasons Work Without Carell?
By Fey’s admission, killing off Carell’s character may not have been the best long-term move, especially now that the show is continuing. Carell’s presence was a major draw for fans, and he brought warmth and heart to the group dynamic.
But with the whole writing team returning — and a clear vision for Season 2 — there’s good reason to trust that the show will still shine. And even if Nick isn’t back on screen, the impact of his character will likely still be felt in every scene.
