On February 8, former Disney star Christy Carlson Romano posted a video on Instagram showing her face a day after being shot. She explained that she took her husband clay pigeon shooting for his birthday when the incident occurred.
“There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face,” she wrote in the caption. While she seemed so calm explaining it, she’s finally revealing what was actually going through her head when it happened.
She Thought ‘Oh That’s Dope, I Just Got Shot’ Before Thinking The Worst
Romano spoke with Neen Williams and Phillip Frankland Lee for the June 10 episode of their podcast, “Not a Damn Chance!” While she said that she wasn’t “at liberty to say the specifics” of the shooting, she did give some harrowing details as to her state of mind.
“I’m shocked and what goes through my head immediately is, ‘Oh that’s dope, I just got shot.’ And then I go, ‘Oh now I’m gonna die,’ I take a knee,” she said (via People). “My husband witnessed it and was like ‘Hey are you hit?’ because I didn’t scream. I didn’t do anything. I was just out of body.”
She recalled her experience on “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.” So, when her husband, Brendan Rooney, asked if she was okay, she instinctively gave a thumbs-up.
“He was like ‘Oh, you’re good.’ And I was like ‘No I’m hit.’ He goes, ‘Oh [expletive],’” she remembered. “So he’s running to me and making sure I’m okay and he’s fighting the urge to hurt the person…but he’s been practicing stoicism recently and there was something in him. He was immediately into action mode, evaluating me, and ran to get the car.”
“I felt this huge rush that I’d never felt before where I was starting to get really woozy. I think it was shock,” she said. “I was covered in blood from my forehead…and I said three things. I was like, am I gonna die? Who’s gonna take care of the girls? Is my career over?”
Romano Says Her Minor Injuries Make Her a “Scientific Miracle’
Christy Carlson Romano acknowledged that, once she was in the hospital, she felt it was her job to make the situation lighter. “In retrospect, I was trying to be funny and not cry because I wanted the people around me to feel more calm so that they could take better care of me,” she realized.
The fact that she still has use of her eye and is alive is a “scientific miracle.” She even still has fragments of the shotgun pellets in her forehead and behind her eye. It’s “1 millimeter from blinding me,” she admitted.
“If my head would’ve been tilted in any other direction, I would have been blind in my right eye,” the “Kim Possible” star said. “Or if I had turned my head, I could have gotten hit in a softer side of my skull and I would have potentially been dead.”
