Drew Barrymore Reveals She Was Recently Ghosted, Puts a Positive Spin on It

The term ‘ghosting’ officially became part of the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2017, but the reference isn’t new. While it used to mean not answering the phone, ignoring or avoiding someone, online dating and our dependence on text and social media to communicate rapidly warped its meaning. Nowadays, dating, friendships, and even long-term relationships can end as easily as one person simply not responding anymore. And it’s not the average person, as we learned after Drew Barrymore revealed that she was recently ghosted.

Barrymore’s Date Vanished After Sending Cryptic Text

On the March 24 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore talked about recently going on a first date with a man who’d asked for her number. “Since then, I texted him and I was like, ‘Lovely to see you again the other night.’ We went back and forth twice, and then he ended with, ‘Haaaaa.’ And I haven’t heard anything,” she recounted to her co-stars.

“It just happens. I don’t know why,” the “Scream” actress continued. “I don’t know why. I would never do that. It doesn’t cross my mind to behave like that. Like, if you put a fishing pole in it, why are you not going to follow through? It does happen to all of us — the best of us. Good people who wouldn’t treat other people like that.”

But despite her annoyance, Barrymore found a silver lining, telling the audience, “…let’s just not indulge in people who waste our time. Those people are actually time-savers.”

She Revealed a Heartbreaking Ghosting Experience Years ago

Notably, this isn’t the first time Barrymore has talked about being ghosted. The actress also discussed the topic on her Drew’s News Podcast in 2023. “I just got ghosted so hard recently,” she told Rayna Greenberg and Ashley Hesseltine. “Oh, it was gnarly. It really, like, hurt my feelings. The person and I had a great date. We made a plan to meet up that weekend and felt like, there’s something here, maybe.”

After admitting that she was so distraught that she called her therapist for advice, Barrymore invoked the infamous “Sex and the City” episode in which Carrie’s boyfriend broke up with her by post-it note. “God, I just miss that Jack Berger Post-It note! We all vilified him in “Sex and the City” for the Post-It note: “I’m sorry, I can’t, don’t hate me,” and this was the bad guy? This guy in this day and age would be a freakin’ saint!”

Unfortunately, two years later, she is still dealing with the frustrating issues all single people have to deal with. Thankfully, her optimism has won out, and she can see that someone ghosting her is really just saving her time in the long run.
